The Independent Spirit Awards

Tomorrow is Oscar day and I cannot wait! But tonight, I will be watching the Independent Spirit Awards on the Independent Film Channel (IFC). The Independent Spirit Awards may include some of those honored with Academy Award nominations, but more often than not, those nominated are people from movies of which you may not have even heard. Thus is the spirit of independent films. It seems only fitting that this award show occurs the day before the Oscars, which many in the industry see as a show that often ignores independent films because they often don’t make a lot of … Continue reading

Independent Films of 1997

My movie viewing life as I knew it changed forever in 1994. That year, I fell in love with the movie Forrest Gump. I saw it at the theater two nights in a row and was rooting for it to win Best Picture at the Academy Awards. I had been a Tom Hanks fan since he donned a wig in “Bosom Buddies.” And to this day, I remain a Tom Hanks fan. I was elated when Forrest Gump won Best Picture. Then, about six months later, I realized I was wrong. I was on a business trip with a co-worker. … Continue reading

Award Season is in Full Bloom

I love award season! I start getting excited when the Golden Globes are announced then the season culminates with a 12-13 hour Oscar day at my house. The Golden Globes were last weekend and they, along with the Screen Actors Guild Awards, which was held last night, begin the road to Oscar for many actors. So far, award season is going as many do. There are some obvious favorites, even though the Academy Awards nominees won’t be announced until February 2nd. Let’s look at some of the big awards. Avatar won the Best Motion Picture-Drama Golden Globe, but does that … Continue reading

Actors that Turned Down Iconic Roles – Part One

Actors that Turned Down Iconic Roles – Part One Yesterday, I was reading at MSNBC how Nicholas Cage was once considered for the role of Randy “The Ram” Robinson in The Wrestler. In case you’ve been living in a cave, this was a role that went to ourke and resurrected his career, despite his losing the Best Actor Oscar this year to Sean Penn. Apparently, there had been rumors circulating that Cage was “let go” from the movie, but he cleared that up at the premiere of his newest movie Knowing. “I wasn’t quote “dropped” from the movie,” Cage told … Continue reading

Who’s Your Favorite Movie Villain? Part Two

In an earlier blog, I was talking about favorite movie villains. Entertainment Weekly put together a list of the top 50 bad guys in cinema history. But, all the villains on the list weren’t guys. Jennifer Jason Leigh’s Hedy Carlson character from Single White Female also got a nod from EW. I love Jennifer Jason Leigh and think that she is one of the most underappreciated actresses of my generation. Another female baddie was Annie Wilkes aka Kathy Bates from Misery. This is another movie I never saw, but it just makes my ankles hurt writing about it. I am … Continue reading

The Golden Globe Nominations Are Announced

The award races are off and running! The Hollywood Foreign Press has announced the nomination for the upcoming 65th annual Golden Globes award show. Atonement, which stars Kiera Knightley and James McAvoy, was the big winner – well as far as nominations goes – with seven including Best Picture-Drama, Best Actress-Drama, Best Actor-Drama, Best Supporting Actress, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Original Score. The other films nominated for Best Picture were American Gangster, Eastern Promises, The Great Debaters, Michael Clayton, No Country for Old Men, and There Will Be Blood. Sadly, I have only heard of a couple of … Continue reading

Fifty Greatest Soundtracks

I have often thought about the question “If you were stranded on a deserted island and could take only one compact disc with you, which one would it be?” I mean, I love music so if I could only have one CD, this would be an important decision. The other day, I caught a bit of the movie Purple Rain on VH1 and thought, “That would be a great CD to take if I could only take one.” I have always loved the soundtrack, having bought it when tapes were still popular. I ended up actually wearing that one out, … Continue reading

The Divorcing! and Married?

Dermot Mulroney and Catherine Keener In my blog about independent films of 1997, I mentioned one of my favorite indie actresses, Catherine Keener. I knew she and husband Dermot Mulroney had separated, but on June 8th, the couple made it official. Divorces papers stating “irreconcilable differences” were filed by Mulroney in the Los Angeles Superior Court. The two, who wed in 1990, have one child, 7 year old son Clyde Keener Mulroney. Mulroney asked for joint legal and physical custody of his son. Catherine is a great actress who has only recently been formally recognized as such with two Best … Continue reading
