O.J. Simpson Headed for the Slammer—Is it Justice Delayed?

Can you really call it a coincidence? Thirteen years to the day after being acquitted of killing his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend, Ron Goldman in one of the most publicized trials of the 20th century, O.J. Simpson was found guilty of robbing two sports-memorabilia dealers at gunpoint. Late yesterday a jury found the former football star guilty on all 12 counts, including kidnapping, armed robbery and 10 other charges stemming from Simpson’s decision to storm into a Las Vegas hotel room with a couple of associates–guns drawn–in an effort to seize several game balls, plaques and photos … Continue reading

In The Slammer

Well, it’s done. Paris Hilton is behind bars right now. According to news reports, the hotel heiress reported to jail late Sunday night—-just hours after attending the MTV Music Awards. (You didn’t expect her jail time to interfere with that bash did you?) And so it begins… the countdown to Hilton’s release is on. For the next 23 days the socialite will be spending 23 hours a day in 12-by-8-foot cell with a bunk, a table, a sink, a toilet and a small window. Hilton reportedly does not have a cellmate and will be able to spend one hour a … Continue reading

What if O.J. Didn’t Do It?

Surely you remember the ‘90s circus that was the O.J. Simpson murder trial. The infamous white Bronco freeway chase that lasted an hour and a half and was watched by most of America. The glove and Johnnie Cockran’s famous “if it doesn’t fit, you must acquit” statement. The racist remarks made by LAPD officer Mark Fuhrmann. The acquittal followed by the guilty verdict in the civil suit of the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman. Then, the book that Simpson wrote titled “If I Did It.” What gall, what arrogance…what…if he didn’t do it? (This image is a … Continue reading

Consequences

One of the tenets of good parenting is teaching children about consequences. But what happens when kids see adults act inappropriately and not have to suffer a penalty for their negative actions? Well, you get a situation similar to the one described in my fellow blogger Stephanie Romero’s post about her son’s recent high school graduation ceremony. In her blog, Stephanie detailed the frustration she felt when several parents blatantly defied the principal’s plea to remain silent while the graduates’ names were being announced and diplomas were being handed out on stage. From what I gather from reading Stephanie’s post, … Continue reading

Teen Kills Parents Then Parties the Night Away

Just when you thought the state of Florida couldn’t churn out any more crazy, the horrific story of 17-year-old Tyler Hadley emerges. According to police, the Port St. Lucie teen is sitting behind bars right now following the grizzly discovery of his bludgeoned parents in the family’s Florida home. Officer say Blake and Mary-Joe Hadley were allegedly smashed in the head with a 22-inch hammer and left for dead late Saturday night. So, who would do such a dastardly deed to two well-respected members of the community? Police say the double murder is the work of the Hadley’s son Tyler, … Continue reading

Know Before You Go

With school out for the summer in most U.S. cities, parents may be tempted to leave their youngsters home alone. Admit it; you’ve driven home after being out and about for a couple hours, but forgot to pick up the all-important toilet paper. You need to drive back to Target, but your 7-year-old refuses to return to the van from his perch on the couch, so you contemplate leaving him home alone while you make like a rocket ship and fly to the store. You’ll only be gone for 15 minutes tops. What could go wrong, right? Well, aside from … Continue reading

Terrible Teeth Tragedy

My daughter’s teeth are black and green. Fortunately, her hideous appearance comes courtesy of leftover Easter jelly beans that she playfully used as caps for her pearly whites. In Pennsylvania, the black and green teeth belonging to a couple of young kids are not the result of child’s play. Unlike my 6-year-old, the Bethlehem kids didn’t pierce jelly beans with their incisors as a joke; rather, police say their rotten teeth are the real deal and the direct result of negligent parents. Having black and green teeth is disturbing enough without becoming the center of a media storm that focuses … Continue reading

Toddler-sitting Teen Texts Herself Into Big Trouble

Thankfully, I have never had to pay anyone to watch my child. I was reminded of how grateful I am of this fact after hearing about the teen babysitter from Ohio, who decided she was sick of her job, and ditched her charges before their parents returned home. The kids are okay, their parents are livid, and the teen sitter is behind bars. Actually, 18-year-old Mia Kemper was released from jail on her own recognizance. Which is a good thing considering she would have probably had a hard time finding someone to bail her sorry behind out of the slammer … Continue reading

Is Your Toddler Destined to be a Troublemaker?

He is if his name is: Alec Ernest Garland Ivan Kareem Luke Malcolm Preston Tyrell Walter Ah, so, now we finally know what’s in a name… trouble, trouble, and trouble. At least that’s what the experts maintain. And by experts I mean a professor from Shippensburg University named David Kalist. Writing in Social Science Quarterly, Kalist insists that giving your boy any of the aforementioned names could land him in jail later in life. Why? Kalist believes that giving newborn males odd, girly or strange first names it “increases the tendency toward juvenile delinquency.” Kalist based his conclusions on a … Continue reading

Do You Leave Your Kids Alone in the Car?

Would you leave your child alone in a car while you hit up the slot machines at your local casino? How about if your little one was sleeping snuggly in his car seat; would you consider leaving him alone in your vehicle while you ran into the market to buy a few essentials, or into the office supply store for a must-have printer cartridge? In some states it doesn’t matter whether you run into Wal-Mart for a pack of gum or spend time working out the kinks in your new roulette strategy—-if you leave your kid alone in a vehicle, … Continue reading
