The Book of Icelanders

There is a new genealogy website called Islendingabok. It is designed to be used by people who live in Iceland in order to discover how closely related they are to another Icelander whom they are considering dating. Apparently, that possibility is a big problem in Iceland. You just met someone interesting, whom you would like to start dating. In the United States, it isn’t very likely that this random person will be someone whom you happen to be closely related to. If you are a genealogist, then you might find it amusing to check anyway, just to have a fun, … Continue reading

Fashion Forward: Wedgie-Proof Underwear

Forget about Ralph Lauren, Tommy Hilfiger and Donna Karan, the hottest fashion designers on the block these days are 8-year-old twin boys. If you tuned into “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” last week you might be familiar with Justin and Jared Serovich’s fashion forward creation—-wedgie-proof underwear also known as the “Rip Away 1000.” The boys rigged boxer shorts and fabric fasteners to hold together some seams—and voila—instant protection from underwear grabbing bullies. “When the person tries to grab you and tries to give you a wedgie – they just rip away,” Justin explained to DeGeneres. The third graders say they came … Continue reading

Must Have Items For Fall That You May Already Own

Just in time for Halloween the weather around here is finally beginning to feel fall-like. (Never mind that I pulled out our sweaters and corduroy pants months ago.) As I perused my closet the other night I was pleasantly surprised (make that shocked) to see that I actually own a few items that fashion experts claim are “must-have” pieces for Fall 2007. This, of course, means that if my closet has items fit for a fall fashionista, yours must too. Take a look at the following list and see if you have the makings of a trendy fall collection in … Continue reading

Juicy Hollywood Gossip: Mary-Kate’s Frown Explained and Kingsley Marries

Ah, Mary-Kate Olsen may have a billion dollars (okay, maybe not but it seems like it), but she still just does not get it. She was asked why she seemed to always look depressed in photos and she said, “I don’t want my picture taken.” She went on to say it is okay to have her photo taken at a red carpet event, but not just on the street. “So every time I see paparazzi, I cover my face so they don’t get a picture, and I’m just a mean person who doesn’t smile.” Hum, I have seen her face … Continue reading

Back To School Fashion Trends

I ran over to the mall this morning to get a new battery for my watch. BIG mistake. I would guess that every intermediate and high school student in the county was there buying new outfits to wear to the first day of school tomorrow. Growing up I went to Catholic school, so needless to say, my summers weren’t spent doing the mall crawl searching for the perfect back to school ensemble. Rather, my mom spent the better half of the summer sewing school uniforms (navy blue slacks and skirts paired with white shirts and navy blue block knot ties). … Continue reading

Celebrity Tidbits: Stepping In, Stepping Out, and Stepping Up

STEPPING IN Actress Mary-Kate Olsen is stepping into a new role. According to the Hollywood Reporter, the former “Full House” star has signed on to be a recurring character on Showtime’s “Weeds.” Network executives confirm that Olsen will appear in 10 of the 15 episodes of the show’s next season. Olsen is reportedly “thrilled” to be making her return to television, though her new role is a far cry from the goodie-goodie PG characters viewers are used to seeing her portray. Let’s face it; “Weeds” isn’t your typical 7 o’clock family-oriented fare—-it’s an adult show with adult subject matter and … Continue reading

Celebrity News: Rehab, Jail, and Hitting back

“Desperate Housewives” Jesse Metcalfe Enters Rehab Jesse Metcalfe, who plays John Rowland on the successful ABC show “Desperate Housewives,” has voluntarily entered a Los Angeles rehab facility to combat alcohol abuse. Rumors are that 28-year-old Metcalfe checked himself into the center last Monday after several days of heavy partying in Hollywood. His representatives have confirmed he is in rehab and asks that the media respect his privacy. There is no word as to how long he will remain in rehab. The rehab announcement comes as rumors were circulating that Metcalfe had proposed to his girlfriend, Nadine Coyle, singer for the … Continue reading

Fashionista’s Aha! Moment

Wikipedia defines “fashionista” as someone who is an “avid follower of fashion.” Perhaps, then you could consider actress Pam Anderson the “anti-fashionista.” It’s not so much that she doesn’t follow fashion, she just… well, she’s just not credited with being very fashionable. The guru of fashion Mr. Blackwell once called Anderson “the worst dressed star trying to stay on television.” Known for sashaying around L.A. in her Daisy dukes and barely-there shirts that accentuated her famous chest, Anderson had another trademark clothing item—those infamous UGGs. The former “Baywatch” star is actually credited with popularizing the sheepskin boots. In fact, in … Continue reading

Fashion Don’t: Baggy Pants

I have written my share of fashion blogs over the past few months. I tend to limit the number of times I inject my own opinion about fashion trends simply because I feel what works for one person may not work for another. As I have mentioned before I am partial to khakis rather than super skinny jeans and prefer little to no makeup versus the Tammy Faye Bakker look (but, like I said to each his/her own). There is however a fashion trend I have not been silent about—super baggy pants. You know the ones wannabe rappers (yes, I’m … Continue reading
