How To Sleep In Cher's Bedby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 01 Aug 2006 04:02 PM Have you ever dreamed of cuddling up in Cher's bed? Come October you may get the chance (minus the singer-actress). The superstar's bed is just one of 700 items up for grabs at an auction benefiting the Cher Charitable Foundation. Not interested in the bed? The sale also includes other furniture, artwork, jewelry, a 2003 H2 Hummer and original costumes by Bob Mackie-all items that have been stored at Cher's Malibu home for quite some time. "I'm truly excited about it, having had this stuff for so many years," Cher told reporters in a recent interview. "I'm only keeping about five items from everything I have." According to Sotheby's, one of two firms administering the auction, Cher's items should bring in more than $1 million. A percentage of that will go to her Foundation, but the impetus for the auction was not entirely philanthropic. Cher admits that she decided to sell the items so she can redecorate. "When I got off the road, something happened and I said, 'You know, I think it's time to do something different,'" Cher said. "But my house is so full that there's no way to do something different unless I totally change it." She plans to redo her home in a mix of styles inspired by Morocco and Tibet. "It sounds crazy, but I'm going to try to mix a whole bunch of cultures together." But to do so the award-winning singer needs to purge her home of the neo-Gothic art and furniture she's had for more than 25 years. Which means, if the price is right, you have the opportunity to walk away with a Gothic revival brass bed, circa 1865; an oak reading table; a pair of painted brass chandeliers; and a 16th-century terra-cotta figurine of Jesus Christ. In addition, 200 pieces from her extensive wardrobe and costume collection, including outfits featured on "The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour" and an original Mackie-designed gown she wore to Oscars will also go to the highest bidder. "The amount of costumes I have is staggering, so this doesn't even make a dent," she told reporters. Cher says she will also auction 85 pieces of jewelry, including beaded items she made herself. A preview exhibition is now on view at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California. The actual auction gets underway on October 3rd.
