Bedtime for Devices

I was always one of those parents who had a bag full of “nevers.”  You know what I mean.  “I will never allow my child to…”  Fill in the blank. It’s so easy before you have children to say what you will never do.  And it’s just as easy when they are young to say what you will never do when they get older. Sure, some of my “nevers” I have stuck to.  But there have been a few I tossed to the side.  And in all honesty, at times it was a matter of not wanting to battle. One … Continue reading

Sleep Deprivation or as I Like to Call It…Perimenopause

If you look up the symptoms of perimenopause, you will see that sleep disturbance is one of them. Sleep disturbance is too a nice a phrase for what’s going on with me. It’s more like sleep twister. Or maybe sleep turbulence. If I am lucky enough to get to sleep, I wake up in the middle of the night then toss and turn until the clock goes off. Last night (I woke up at 3:02 am) was better than the night before (I woke up at 1:14 am). For the first time in my life, I am having trouble getting … Continue reading

Sleepwalking

When I was little, I used to sleepwalk. I have always been pretty active during sleep. That may sound ridiculous, but it is true. I would sleep walk as a child, I have had many lucid dreams (where you are aware in your dream that you are, in fact, dreaming), and even now, I have very busy dreams. But, that’s for another blog. I remember my mother telling me once that our dog stopped me from going down the stairs one night when I was sleepwalking by barking until my parents woke up. One night not too long ago, I … Continue reading

Are You Sleep Deprived?

When I was younger, I never understood what the big deal was about sleep. I’d hear older people complain about not sleeping good and I’d think “I never have a problem!” I had no problem as a late teen getting by on three or four hours of sleep a night. I guess I am officially “older” now because my sleep patterns range from “like a baby” to “not at all.” Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania recently did a study that showed the states that are most sleep deprived. Southern states ranked highest, which doesn’t surprise me. The study showed … Continue reading

Study Shows Link Between Sleep, Obesity, and Learning Problems

A study finds that there is a connection between lack of sleep, learning difficulties, and childhood obesity. The existence of one of these three factors increases the risk that a child will also experience the other two factors. It could mean that reducing one factor can decrease the risk of developing the other two. A study was done at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine. It included 351 elementary school kids. The average age of the children in this study was eight years old. There were some variables that were the same with all of the children in … Continue reading

Teen Sleep Deprivation Study

I remember when I was a teen, it seemed like I never needed to sleep. Now, if I don’t get 8 hours a night, I am a total grump. But, a recent study showed that sleep deprivation in teens can be potentially dangerous. Lela R. McKnight-Eily of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention was the lead author of the study recently published in Prevention Magazine. She and other researchers looked at data from the 2007 Youth Risk Behavior Study. That study collected info on teens in grades 9 through 12 from every state and the District of Columbia and … Continue reading

The Sleep Nazi

I’ve been called a lot of unflattering things since becoming a parent, but “Sleep Nazi” is not one of them. Allow me to clarify: I am often accused of being a “Sleep Nazi,” only I don’t consider it unflattering at all. In fact, it’s a title I wear with unrelenting, in-your-face pride. If you saw how my child acts when she doesn’t get a good’s night sleep, I guarantee you would dig deep to find a much more complimentary title for me. I am a stickler when it comes to bedtime; namely because my child is an absolute wreck if … Continue reading

Lack of Sleep in Early Childhood Can Cause ADHD Symptoms

A study was done that focused on the affect of lack of sleep on preschool aged children. I bet that most parents can pretty much guess some of the results, based on how their preschoolers behave after not getting enough sleep. The more interesting part of the study reveals that kids who didn’t get enough sleep when they were preschoolers exhibited more symptoms of ADHD then were typical when those children reached kindergarten. What does your preschooler do when he or she is overtired? Many preschoolers who are lacking sleep can get giddy, giggly, and hyperactive. Your child who lacks … Continue reading

Genetics and Environment Affects Toddlers Sleep

How well does your toddler, sleep? You may have heard it said that how well a toddler sleeps can be predicted by how well her parents slept when they were that age. Other theories point to the environment that the toddler is trying to sleep in. So, which is it, then? Is it something handed down through the family genetically, or something based on the situation? A new study reveals some interesting answers. Sleep is very important. Missing out on sleep can leave both adults, and children, lethargic and cranky. Parents who have toddlers who do not sleep well quickly … Continue reading

Sleep Deficit Very Disruptive for Kids with ADHD

Researchers have discovered that even a moderate sleep deficit has a big affect on the neurobehavioral functioning of children who have ADHD. This appears to have a direct, and negative, impact on how kids with ADHD are able to function in school. The implication is that if extra efforts are made to ensure that the child gets enough sleep every night, that this will improve his or her school experience. I think everyone knows what it feels like to have to go through a day after not getting enough sleep. This tends to make people feel lethargic, and unmotivated, and … Continue reading
