Banning Skinny People

Skinny person discrimination? Didn’t know there could be such a thing until I read a story about a gym in Canada that has actually banned skinny people from entering. In fact, you must be plus-sized in order to workout, the rules set forth by the gym’s owner at “Body Exchange” in Vancouver. Hmmm…I sense the possibility of a trend starting here. Now I have to admit, there may be something to this. I know that for some people, going to a fitness center can be really intimidating. Especially when you walk in and everyone in sight looks fit and toned. … Continue reading

Want to Get Skinny? Eat Chocolate

I knew it all along. Those of use who eat chocolate tend to be skinnier. No one would believe me, but her you go, some evidence. Well, at least some support for my theory. Researchers have found that eating chocolate may in fact keep you slim. People who eat chocolate frequently tend to have a lower Body Mass Index (BMI) than people who eat chocolate only infrequently. (Who are these people who only eat it infrequently? Perhaps we should sign them up for a study that examine’s their mental health. Just kidding of course.) The average person eats chocolate twice … Continue reading

When Skinny Goes Too Far

Like mother like daughter. One British mom is being accused of taking the idiom a bit too far. Twenty-six-year-old Rebecca Jones is making headlines for sharing her 7-year-old’s love of clothes. Actually, the mom doesn’t just love clothes as much her young daughter, the two share the same wardrobe. The exact same wardrobe. In a tragic way. Rebecca is able to wear her second grader’s outfits because she is anorexic. The mom weighs a mere 70 pounds, or roughly 20 pounds less than her only child. Rebecca is also eight inches taller than her daughter Maisy, though her stature doesn’t … Continue reading

Surviving the Weeks Between Skinny Jeans and Panel Pants

If it weren’t for the ultrasound you carry with you everywhere you go, your strong aversion to the smell of fish and your constant trips to the bathroom, most people would be oblivious to the fact that you are expecting. You are painfully aware of your condition, however, and so is your wardrobe. There is a period between skinny jeans and panel pants. Your old pants are too tight to be comfortable (or even zip) and maternity pants are always on the brink of falling down to your ankles. In the warmer months, you still have the option of wearing … Continue reading

Super Skinny Me

Kate Spicer – Honestly Showing us the Ugly Side of Weight Loss Last week I watched a BBC program called “Super Skinny Me” and I related to it much more than I’d care to admit. In it, two British journalists agreed to spend five weeks doing whatever they had to do to reach the mythical size zero. I should mention here that both of them were very healthy and attractive women before they ever started their weight loss journeys. The one journalist I related to most was Kate Spicer. She is 38, 5’8″ tall and weighed 140 pounds. That weight … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: Skinny Fliers and Kid-Friendly Hotels

SKINNY FLIERS Air carrier Frontier is tooting its horn again. This time they are bragging about their skinny passengers. (Earlier this year the airline was touting its decision to add more seats to its planes and providing in-flight e-mail access.) Now the carrier says it is flying light and saving money in the process. According to airline officials, the company recently conducted a survey that it says indicates its customers weigh less than the average U.S. flier. Frontier executives said its passengers and their carry-on bags “weigh 17 pounds less than the national average,” helping it save “$3.5 million a … Continue reading

Getting My Mind Right: The Skinny On How I’m Doing

I am now officially on weight maintenance and trying to find an eating plan that will work. My weight is staying level, but I am really sort of dieting and sort of eating carefully. I am having funny, but exciting, things happening. The other day, I had my hand on one side of the middle of my abdomen and I noticed something protruding. I found Nancy and said, “Something right here is sticking out”. She asked me if I had one on the other side and, when I did, pointed out that I was feeling my rib cage. This morning … Continue reading

The Skinny On The New Skinny

Actress Scarlett Johansson is revealing herself in the October issue of InStyle magazine. I don’t mean literary, I mean she is talking about issues few Hollywood beauties like to delve into—mainly the topics of weight and body image. Johansson tells the magazine that she is confident, rather than critical of her shapely figure. “I’m curvy – I’m never going to be 5’11’ and 120 pounds. But I feel lucky to have what I’ve got,” said the 21-year-old. Refreshing remarks given the recent controversy surrounding models, actresses and socialites dealing with weight issues. By now I am sure you are familiar … Continue reading

Twelve Months Post Partum: An Exercising Journey Part VII

Since I had been trying on my pre pregnancy jeans quite regularly after my the birth of my daughter only to find them too tight over and over again, it was a very pleasant surprise to find that my jeans were actually too big! However, I have noticed some size discrepancy between jeans I have owned for several years and the new sizes at the boutiques.  I confirmed my suspicion by going to my favorite clothing boutique and trying on the same skinny jean in the next size down: they fit perfectly!  Needless to say, pushing my workout routine into … Continue reading
