Your Child’s Name Could Impact His or Her Future

Would a Rose, by any other name, smell just a sweet? Perhaps Rose’s parents would think so. They obviously have very positive associations with the name that brings to mind a beautiful flower. Other people may not look upon her name quite so favorably. Research suggests that a person’s name shapes the course of his or her life. Parents have so many factors to consider when choosing a name for a new baby. Should you name the baby after a relative? Would a name that is currently cool be a good idea? How about a name that reflects your family’s … Continue reading

More Ways to Hurt Your Unborn Child

You don’t need to stroll down the baby book aisle at your local library or even Google “pregnancy concerns” to learn about all the ways you can harm your unborn child. Stress, unhealthy eating, excessive consumption of alcohol and spending too much time in a hot tub are huge no-nos for pregnant women. Now, women looking to add to their families can tack yet another risk to the ever-growing list: Working after the eighth month of pregnancy. According to a new study conducted by the University of Essex–which compiled research done in the UK and the US–women who continue to … Continue reading

Are You a Baby Talk Basher?

Are you guilty of slapping on a smile when speaking to a baby and letting loose on nauseatingly annoying phrases like: “Coochie, coochie coo you cutesy wootsey cutie patootie! Does my little poopsie woopsie need a fresh diapey wipey?” Baby talk. For some parents it’s their best friend, while other moms and dads view the high-pitched, jibber jabber as their worst enemy. If you do a lot of baby-talking in public places, you might end up with more enemies than friends, but that’s no reason to tone down your shrill sentences, at least according to some pediatric speech and language … Continue reading

Sharing Your Tools

Reason #87 for hosting a scrapbooking party: Sharing your fancy tools with those less fortunate. I don’t own a Cricut machine. In fact, if it were not for the generosity of my neighbor, I probably wouldn’t even know what the machine did besides chirp. Okay, it doesn’t really chirp, but with a name like Cricut (pronounced “cricket”) and the amount of money you have to shell out to own one, you’d think it would chirp, dance and piece together layouts while you sipped a tropical libation on the couch. I cannot afford a Cricut machine. Rather, I just lust after … Continue reading

Don’t Assume Your Child’s School Understands Allergies

A little girl in Virginia died from an allergic reaction while she was at school. This tragedy emphasizes how important it is for parents to ensure that the teachers and staff at their child’s school are prepared to appropriately handle a sudden allergic reaction. One cannot assume that they will know what to do. Ammaria Johnson was seven years old, and in the first grade at an elementary school in Virginia. It had been suspected that she may have had an allergy to peanuts. When she went out for recess one day, tragedy struck. She broke out in hives, and … Continue reading

What Does That Word Mean?

Every so often, genealogists will come across words that they have never seen before. I had this happen to me today, when I was reading a news article. I wondered about what that particular word actually meant. Fortunately, there are plenty of online resources that can help me find out. I am someone who loves to read. I find a news article, or blog, that catches my attention, and I immediately click on it. From there, I typically find other things that also look interesting to read. I end up bookmarking more pages than I am likely to ever find … Continue reading

A Game For Your Surname

Sometimes when you want to break away from your regular family history research, you can find genealogy-related things to do just for amusement. For example, today I did a Google search for my surname to see what the other Berthiaumes out there are like. We are a diverse bunch, and I am sure that all of us share the common frustration that most people can not pronounce our name correctly, let alone spell it. Who are the Berthiaumes that I found with my Google search? I do not believe that I am related to any of the people that I … Continue reading

Does Facebook Kill Kids?

Fifty years. That’s how long a Florida mom will spend behind bars for shaking her 3-month-old son to death after his cries interrupted her FarmVille game on Facebook. A half century in prison for killing an innocent baby. Some say it’s not enough. Twenty-two-year-old Alexandra Tobias was given the sentence just last week as a judge wrapped up her murder case, which began last October. A couple of months ago the mom pleaded guilty to killing her infant son with her bare hands, and then lying to authorities to cover up his death. According to court records, Tobias told investigators … Continue reading

Are You an Apple or a Pear? Part One

When I was young I remember my mom always talking about how she was a pear and her friend was an apple. I looked at her quizzically and asked why she was comparing herself and her friend to fruit. She explained that she had a body shape like a pear and her friend had a body shape like an apple. My mom carried more weight on the lower half of her body while her friend carried more weight in her belly or torso. At the time I was shaped more like an asparagus so I dismissed the idea entirely. As … Continue reading

What Can Your Preschooler Say?

What can your preschooler say? Now, I’m not talking about nice big words like supercalifragilisticexpialidocious here, even though we’re big fans of Mary Poppins these days. No, I’m talking about enunciation. My daughter has a name that is difficult for small children to pronounce. More specifically, she has a name that has an “or” sound in the middle of it. She pronounces this sound as “ow,” leading most people think that her name is something else entirely. Needless to say, this is very irritating for a four-year-old. Now, when people ask her what her name is, she spells it for … Continue reading
