Celebrity Milestones: Hootie Leaves the Blowfish, Aniston the Stalker and Heavenly Wedding

Hootie has been sucked into the country music vortex and now the Blowfish are left to swim alone. Darius Rucker, frontman of the award-winning rock band Hootie & the Blowfish, is leaving his bandmates behind so he can focus on a solo career as a country music star. Rucker made the announcement last week saying that while he and the rest of the band will do four charity concerts each year, they will no longer record new music or tour together. Like pop star Jessica Simpson did last year, Rucker says he wants to try his hand at being a … Continue reading

Hootie Helps Out

In Hollywood it seems brown is the new black, black is the new blonde, and giving is the new receiving. Yes, some celebrities actually feel it is better to give than receive. A bit of a shocker if you believe the myriad tabloid tales that detail fights between “petty and shallow” celebs, who will stop at nothing to make sure they don’t leave a Hollywood function without a well stocked goodie bag. But, not all of today’s biggest stars fit under the category of self-absorbed stuck-ups. Take for example, the members of the hit band “Hootie & the Blowfish.” Beginning … Continue reading

The Power of Guest Stars

Forget about Michael Phelps sinking or swimming during his stint as host of this week’s “Saturday Night Live,” I’m more interested in the rumor that “SNL” alum Tina Fey may be returning to the popular comedy sketch show to play Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin. I have been a fan of Fey’s since she made her debut on “SNL” (she left to head up NBC’s “30 Rock”) and would be thrilled to see her back on late-night TV. “SNL” head honcho Lorne Michaels wouldn’t confirm Fey’s temporary return; rather all he would tell reporters is that whoever plays John … Continue reading

International Goodwill

We devote a lot of space to celebrity do-gooders in this blog category. However, looking back at previous blogs I have noticed the majority of them focus on the charitable works of Americans. Well, here’s a blog and about a non-American celebrity who is reaching out to children from her home country. Five time Latin Grammy nominee Shakira just announced she will donate the proceeds from a concert in her hometown to build an arts school for 1,800 children forced to flee their homes by Colombia’s civil war. According to press reports, the concert will take place November 15th in … Continue reading

A Growing Group of Hollywood Do-Gooders

I remember when a celebrity would make headlines for doing some type of charitable work. Nowadays it seems aiding the less fortunate is the “in” thing to do. Everyone from Eminem and Hootie and Blowfish to megawatt couple Brangelina and “Desperate Housewives’” Eva Longoria are lending their names (and Brangelina’s case, their own money) to charitable foundations. It’s gotten to the point where organizations are looking for creative ways to merge the celebrity and the cause. Such is the case with the Relix Bands. Relix Bands are crafted by Azu Studios from the used guitar strings of more than 50 … Continue reading

Matt Damon’s New Mission

Add actor Matt Damon to the growing list of Hollywood do-gooders. The “Bourne Identity” star joins pals Brad Pitt, Angelina Jolie, Nicolas Cage, members of the band Hootie and the Blowfish and rapper Eminem (to name just a few) who are lending a hand to those in need. The Academy Award winner’s new mission has him fighting poverty and AIDS in Africa. According to PEOPLE Magazine, Damon took up the cause in May after spending more than a week visiting the impoverished country. And, just a few days ago he hosted a fundraiser in Toronto to raise money to fight … Continue reading

Gimmie, Gimme, Gimmie—Give, Give, Give: Charitable Celebrities Lend a Helping Hand

We’re used to hearing about the demands that some of Hollywood’s biggest names frequently voice on movie sets or at various concert venues. Perhaps that’s why there is so much press generated when any one of Tinseltown’s mega-watt stars illustrate a preference to give than to receive. In just the last week we’ve read that Angelina Jolie regularly donates a third of her income to charitable causes. Then billionaires Warren Buffet and Bill Gates announced that they are giving half of their fortunes to charity. Just a few days ago the pop-rock band, Hootie and The Blowfish kicked off a … Continue reading
