Celebrity Do-Gooders Turn Their Attention to Myanmar

Lending a hand to those in war-torn Darfur is so yesterday. These days Hollywood’s A-listers are turning their sights on another country that treats its people poorly—-Myanmar (also known as Burma). Jim Carrey, Will Ferrell, Jennifer Aniston and Ellen Page are among the stars supporting a new campaign aimed at bringing to light the atrocities committed by members of Myanmar’s military-run government. Carrey was the first celeb to film a public service announcement to raise awareness about the Southeast Asian country and human rights leader Aung San Suu Kyi, who has been confined by the government for 12 of the … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potpourri: Actor’s Dogs are Not Killers and Clooney’s Latest Award

Ving Rhames’ dogs didn’t kill anyone. Or so claims a new report that was compiled after an exhaustive five-month investigation. According to the Los Angeles Department of Coroner, 40-year-old Jacob Adams, the man who was found dead on the front lawn of the actor’s L.A. home back in August was not mauled to death by Rhames’ dogs as police first reported. Rather, the coroner found that Adams “died because of a preexisting heart problem.” As for the dog bites found on him the coroner determined they were “non-fatal.” Rhames was out of the country filming a movie when his friend … Continue reading

Hollywood Do-Gooders Making Headlines

Actor Will Ferrell claims he has a surefire way for you to win the parent of the year award. The bad news: It doesn’t come cheap. (Surprise, surprise.) But, the good news is that every penny goes to a great cause. The movie star is auctioning a cameo spot in his new film to raise money for a fraternity brother’s cancer foundation. The opening bid for the movie appearance is $5,000. Ferrell calls the auction the best place in the world for you to purchase the perfect Christmas present for your son or daughter—-the chance to work with him. You … Continue reading

Star Offers Up Freedom To Help Rebel Leader

While other stars use cold hard cash to send political messages one Hollywood heavyweight is using her freedom. Mia Farrow just announced that she offered to give up her rights as a citizen of the United States to ensure an ailing Darfur rebel leader receives safe passage out of a local hospital. The offer was put into writing in a letter the actress sent to Sudan’s president and posted on her website. According to Farrow, the rebel leader, Suleiman Jamous, has been a key link between Darfur rebels and aid workers in the war-torn Sudanese region. The 62-year-old actress says … Continue reading

Hollywood Do-Gooders Donating To Darfur

Sometimes I wonder how many people would know what or where Darfur was if it wasn’t for George Clooney. The handsome actor certainly has devoted a ton of his time turning the spotlight on the impoverished people who live in the region of Sudan. Both Libby and I have documented Clooney’s ongoing work to bring humanitarian efforts to the region and it seems as though the “ER” star’s work is paying off. According to Clooney, his “Ocean’s Thirteen” co-stars recently donated a huge chunk of change to humanitarian efforts in Darfur. Clooney along with his “Ocean’s” pals, Brad Pitt, Matt … Continue reading

George Clooney Nobel Peace Prize Winner?

It appears he may be well on his way. The handsome actor who has graced many a magazine cover is making headlines again—-this time though, it has nothing to do with his relationship with Fabio or his comments about Britney Spears. George Clooney along with celeb pal Don Cheadle are being honored for their efforts to bring peace to Africa’s war-torn Darfur region. But the honor is not being bestowed upon the two actors by just anyone. Clooney and Cheadle will be flying to Rome next month to accept the 2007 Peace Summit Award from the 8th World Summit of … Continue reading

Stephen Colbert–Public School Teachers’ Hero

Don’t underestimate the power of Stephen Colbert. The Comedy Central star may have lost out on his chance to run for the president of the United States, but his words are still powerful enough to rally the troops. During the hoopla surrounding Colbert’s mock presidential bid the host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” also asked viewers to give to DonorsChoose.org, which helps fulfill teacher wish lists for books, globes and other classroom materials in schools throughout the country. A South Carolina native, Colbert took time to promote the organization in an effort to help public school teachers and students … Continue reading

Celebrities Lending a Hand

Madonna is putting her money where her mouth is. The adoption advocate is teaming up with Gucci to raise money for orphans in Malawai. The impoverished southern African nation is where the Material Girl and her husband Guy Ritchie met their 2-year-old son David Banda. (The couple has not officially been named the boy’s parents, but he has been living with them since last year.) According to the 49-year-old singer, she will host a star-studded fundraiser – including a dinner, musical performance and party – on February 6, 2008 to open Gucci’s new store on New York’s Fifth Avenue. “I … Continue reading

George Clooney’s New Gig

From Darfur to Switzerland? It appears hunky George Clooney is spreading his knowledge of all things environmentally and socially sound to a more neutral country. According Clooney’s rep, the handsome and still bruised actor has accepted the job of executive board member of a new Swiss energy company that will “develop environmentally friendly techniques for car motors and other devices.” The new company is being created by a Swiss billionaire who is interested in pursuing new advancements in the clean production of hydrogen, solar energy and fuel cells. George Clooney Supports Suspended Hospital Staff

Is this guy amazing or what? George Clooney never ceases to shock me. The actor, who was injured a couple of weeks ago during a motorcycle crash in New Jersey is now coming to the rescue of medical employees who were suspended without pay for allegedly leaking his and girlfriend Sarah Larson’s private medical records to the media. In a statement released yesterday Clooney addressed the reports that claimed as many as 40 hospital workers leaked confidential information to various media outlets. “This is the first I’ve heard of it,” Clooney said. “And while I very much believe in a … Continue reading
