Hilton Won't Appeal

Paris Hilton has had a change of heart. In a statement released late yesterday (from her jail cell) the blonde socialite says she won't appeal her 45-day jail sentence. Rather, Hilton says she is "learning and growing" from her time in the slammer.

"Today, I told my attorneys not to appeal the judge's decision," Hilton said in the statement. "While I greatly appreciate the sheriff's concern for my health and welfare, I intend to serve my time at L.A. County Jail."

For the record, Hilton isn't exactly in a "jail cell." Rather, the celebutante is sitting in the medical ward of a maximum-security detention center in the heart of L.A. in a room with a glass door and guards posted outside. It is here that the hotel heiress is undergoing medical and psychiatric evaluations to determine the best jail to keep her in as she serves the rest of her sentence.

Hilton is in the medical ward because law enforcement sources said she was "teetering on the brink." Prior to her return to jail on Friday the sheriff's department wouldn't comment on an alleged "unspecified medical condition" they claimed Hilton was suffering from. Now, the sheriff is revealing that it wasn't an "unusual rash" that sprung the 26-year-old, but rather a "psychological problem" that made him "fear for her safety" and convinced him to approve Hilton's transfer to house arrest last week.

According to sources, Hilton's condition has deteriorated since her meltdown in court two days ago. She is described by some law enforcement officials as "sullen and withdrawn," "a train wreck," and "fragile and despondent." Hilton's doctor, who reportedly spent a couple of hours with the "train wreck" on Saturday, said the reality TV star hadn't slept or eaten since she was sent back to jail.

I know, I know... boo-hoo, right? Well, here's more of Hilton's take on her current situation as penned in her latest statement to the public:

"Being in jail is by far the hardest thing I have ever done," she said in the statement. "During the past several days, I have had a lot of time to think and I believe that I am learning and growing from this experience."

The millionairess added she was "shocked" by the attention her case has received and suggested the public and media focus on "more important things like the men and women serving our country in Iraq... and other places in the world."

How noble.

By the way, if you are keeping track of how long Hilton will remain behind bars... if she gets credited for good behavior, she could be released in a little more than two weeks.
