A Mother’s View from the Pool—Bikinis on Babies?

Have you been to your local community pool this summer? It has been the hang out of choice for my preschooler, who finally learned how to tread water on her own (well, kind of). Our near daily visits to our county’s aquatic center have not only afforded my daughter the opportunity to learn how to swim, but it has served as inspiration for quite a few of my blogs. The city pool is the perfect place to people watch. You see a variety of people and just as many different parenting styles, techniques and problems. And then there are the … Continue reading

Pop Culture Goes High Tech

I have blogged about the power of YouTube in previous entries, but this latest incident truly proves how powerful the medium has become. Police in New Zealand say they were able to catch a thief thanks to a video posted on the popular Internet video sharing site, YouTube. According to officers, the man was taped circling the store, stealing a laptop computer, slipping it into his overcoat, then stepping out of the store unnoticed. Or so he thought. Shortly after the thief took off, his performance in the store was posted on YouTube – set to “The Pink Panther” music … Continue reading

High Tech Bikini

File this under the “What They Won’t Think Of Next” category. A Canadian company has designed a new bikini that is able to tell wearers when it’s time to head to the shade. I’m well aware of what century we live in and the fact that practically everything on the market nowadays has gone high-tech, but an electronic bikini? It’s true. A Canadian company named Solestrom has created a bikini with a UV meter built into its belt. When the meter records high levels of UV rays a built-in alarm sounds warning the wearer to get out of the sun. … Continue reading

The Pressure to Be Perfect

What was your crowning achievement as a student? For some it’s scoring the winning goal during a middle school soccer game. Others leave high school with the title of valedictorian or salutatorian. But, for Stephanie Zaner of Maryland, the one thing that sets her apart from the average student is that she hasn’t missed a day of school—-ever. Never. Ever. Ever. From the day the now 18-year-old entered kindergarten until her recent graduation from high school, Zaner has not missed a single minute of school. Though, as the upbeat teens tells it, her streak hasn’t been easy to preserve. Earning … Continue reading

Parents as Fashion Police

From the pool… back to school. Summer is rapidly coming to an end (sigh) and soon parents will be less worried about whether their daughter’s swimsuits are too tight and more concerned about whether their son’s pants are too baggy. Right now many of us are smack in the middle of that dreaded annual ritual—back to school shopping. Besides gathering the right shopping lists for each child and calculating how our household budgets will accommodate new pens, pencils, backpacks, socks, shoes, pants, tops and haircuts most parents are faced with the additional role of acting as fashion police. Who among … Continue reading

The Word of the Year

If you have a teen who is obsessed with computer games then Merriam-Webster’s Word of the Year is one you are probably very familiar with… especially if they do a lot of winning. Three cheers for “W00t.” The hybrid of letters and numbers used by online game enthusiasts as a way to express happiness or victory, topped all other terms in the Springfield-based dictionary publisher’s online poll for the word that best sums up 2007. Must have been quite a year for gamers. Merriam-Webster’s president says he is pleased with the choice because it reflects the growing role technology plays … Continue reading

Have You Heard of the Burqini?

Have you heard of the Burqini? I hadn’t until a reader sent me a note a couple of days ago and asked me about it. It didn’t take much research to find out more about it. First and foremost, it’s not teenie-weenie like the old advertisements used to promote the greatness of the bikini, but I think it’s likely one of the better fashion achievements of its type. The Burqini is exactly what it sounds like a cross between a bikini and a burqa. The fact that it’s designed for swimming is the only resemblance it has to the two … Continue reading
