School for the Deaf Wins Tickets to Taylor Swift Concert

An unexpected turn of events resulted in Taylor Swift concert tickets for all students of the Horace Mann School for the Deaf. The school also will receive $10,000 in musical instruments for its music program. This happened after the school entered a contest that it got disqualified from because of the actions of internet trolls. VH1’s Save the Music Program was the sponsor of an online contest. Schools and colleges could enter. The winning school would receive an on campus concert performed by Taylor Swift. The school that got the most votes on Facebook would win the concert. The schools … Continue reading

Will High School Musical Continue?

Parents, you might need to console your tweens and teens: it’s a bittersweet day for fans of Disney’s mammoth “High School Musical” franchise. After two Disney Channel movies, one silver screen flick, and countless albums, merchandise, theater and international spin-offs, the era of the Wildcats as we know it is over. But the story isn’t entirely finished, thus the silver lining to the cloud. Ashley Tisdale, who played the drama queen antagonist of the series, signed on to star in the spin-off tv movie “Sharpay’s Fabulous Adventure.” The movie starts filming this summer for a 2011 release on the Disney … Continue reading

It was just a matter of time before we were all in this together… again. Disney just announced that it plans to go back to school with “High School Musical 4.” The fourth edition of the cult phenomenon will reportedly begin production later this year and air sometime in 2010. Disney sources say the popular musical will include a few new twists this time around, including the introduction of a new cast of characters and a storyline that will focus on a cross-town school rivalry. Disney execs say they are hoping the new characters will draw a record number of … Continue reading

High School Musical… 55?

Parents of Zac Efron, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Tisdale and Corbin Bleu fans brace yourselves… it appears the popular kids from Disney’s “High School Musical” series aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. “High School Musical 3” hasn’t even started shooting (filming begins in two weeks in Utah and it’ll be in movie theaters in the fall) and the folks at Disney are already working on “High School Musical 4.” According to Disney execs, the script for “High School Musical 4” is in the process of being inked and as it stands now the project will likely be a TV movie unlike “High … Continue reading

The Benny Goodman Story (1955)

I’m a huge fan of the music of the 1930’s-1940’s, so it was a treat for me to watch “The Benny Goodman Story” starring Steve Allen. As I always do when watching what is, supposedly, a true story, I went online to find out what parts of the movie were based on reality and which parts were fabricated for Hollywood. Unlike “Night and Day,” the story of Cole Porter, “The Benny Goodman Story” is largely based on fact. Benny was born to Polish immigrants and raised in the Jewish faith. Benny was introduced to the clarinet through a teacher at … Continue reading

High School Musical 2 is Coming

Do you remember Troy and Gabriella? Their first encounter startled them both as they shared a tune and a great moment at a ski lodge over Christmas. High School Musical was a somewhat sappy, but altogether entertaining film featured on the Disney Channel. They later released the movie on DVD and the sales declared its popularity. High School Musical has also traveled the country as a concert tour and an ice show. Soundtracks fly off the shelves. We own a copy of it here and my daughter loves it. Disney is better on the popularity of the first to attract … Continue reading

5 Great Christmas Gifts for the Homeschooling Family on Your List

I am always looking for something that’s educational but is not the equivalent of getting socks and underwear to my kids. This is no small feat, but it can be done. Consider putting the following in the stockings or under the trees of the homeschoolers you love! 1. Educational Games Everyone loves a good board game. So why not pick up a gift certificate for an online store like Fun Again.com? Too many choices? I am personally partial to plunder chess. Leap Frog has also come out with a series of board games that help teach early learning skills. 2. … Continue reading

The Technology Band Uses iPads

High school students in Queens, New York, are using the iPad as a musical instrument. The students have been described as having “severe learning disabilities”, and many have an autism spectrum disorder. Their teacher, Adam Goldberg, found a way to use the iPad to enable the students to make music. This is amazing! It has been known, for quite some time, that the iPad is incredibly useful for students with a variety of learning disabilities and special needs. One example of this is how the Milford school district, in Connecticut, uses the iPad with students who have autism. The school … Continue reading

How Old Are Those Teen Idols Really?

(wikimedia commons) I last wrote about my aversion to teen idols and my philosophy that teens should not be idolizing TV and movie stars. As I mentioned in that article, many of these teen stars are grown men and women which is even more reason for teens not to be following their everyday life and emulate them. Following, is a list of “teen” stars, both old and new and their true ages. I believe it is important for parents to discuss this with teens so they will understand that they cannot do everything that “teens” on TV do. Jason Earles … Continue reading

Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards

The Nickelodeon is celebrating its 23rd annual Kids’ Choice Awards (KCAs) on March 28th. Now, I will have to watch because Dwayne Johnson (The Rock) will be hosting, but others will be watching for different reasons. (This image is a work of a U.S. Air Force Airman or employee, taken or made during the course of the person’s official duties. Brown has been nominated for Favorite Male Singer … Continue reading
