Hello Kitty Goes High Tech

This may be the only time you will ever see me reference my young daughter in the same post alongside Mariah Carey and Britney Spears. But when it comes to Hello Kitty there might not be a bigger fan. The famous female singers may have more money to spend on paraphernalia featuring the fictional feline, but my daughter is not far behind (click here to see her posing in her latest Hello Kitty jacket) and what’s more, the loyalty my offspring has shown to the big headed cat in her lifetime is something Carey and Spears have yet to illustrate … Continue reading

Hello Kitty Says Hello to New Travel Job

Regular readers of this blog know how completely obsessed my young daughter is with Hello Kitty. The popular fictional feline with the oversized face is a staple in our home. From shirts to pens, purses to sheets, pillows, sandals, stickers, sunglasses, hair pins, tote bags, duffels, backpacks, hats and banks, Japan’s No.1 export has invaded every inch of our living space and it looks as though she will be sticking around for a while. Hello Kitty is known for winning over the hearts of girls my daughter’s age, but now her cuteness is being marketed to another sector of the … Continue reading

Hello Kitty for Boys

My daughter loves Hello Kitty. Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty, Hello Kitty… the cute cuddly white bubble-headed feline decorates just about every square inch of her room and at times her body too. From toys to tees, jeans to jewelry, bedding to bags, watches to window clings, lipstick to laundry baskets, and everything in between, that cat has invaded our living space and it doesn’t so much as meow (thank goodness). With all that its creators—-Japan’s Sanrio Co.—-have done to commercialize Hello Kitty you’d think their latest move would have come a long time ago. According to company spokespeople, Sanrio plans … Continue reading

Back-to-School Backpack Wars

I remember a time when any bag I gave my daughter was met with a joyous squeal, a monstrous smile and an even bigger hug. Seriously, a leftover purse circa 1978, found curled up in the corner of the closet with a broken zipper, was like finding a pot of gold to my bag lady in training. Ah… the good ol’ days. My darling daughter is six years old now and the days of her willingly accepting anything I select have long faded in the rearview mirror on the long, winding road through parenthood. Last year, in preparation for her … Continue reading

Hannah Montana Essay Contest Debacle

It’s incidents like these that make me overjoyed that my young daughter is still in love with Strawberry Shortcake, Hello Kitty, Elmo and Blues Clues… and that she has no clue who Hannah Montana is. (I’m hoping I can keep her in the dark for years to come.) If you have a pint-sized Hannah Montana fan in your home then you might be familiar with the essay contest brouhaha that emerged when a 6-year-old girl and her mother went to extremes to secure four concert tickets to the tween sensation’s sold-out show. The youngster’s essay began with the powerful line: … Continue reading

Murphy’s Fan Club

I don’t know how he does it, but in both neighborhoods he’s lived in Murphy has acquired a fan base. Mostly the kids in the neighborhood, but he has his people admirers as well as a host of dog fans too. In Jacksonville At our old house, the first one Murph ever knew, I could understand why the neighborhood kids initially were drawn to him. He was a puppy. Not a newborn puppy, we’d gotten him when he was about five months old, but he was still puppyish enough. One of our across-the-street neighbors had three boys. At the time, … Continue reading
