Happy Un-Valentine's Day!

In a previous blog I told you that I won't be partaking in a romantic dinner this Valentine's Day. Nor, am I expecting to be showered with diamonds, rubies, sapphires or chocolates. That said; I am still looking forward to February 14th. Others I know are also looking forward to the day, but not because they are planning to mark the occasion with flowers and kisses. Rather, they are preparing to take part in "Anti-Valentine's Day" festivities.

"Anti-Valentine's Day." I had not heard of the, uh, "celebration(?)" until I came across an aisle of "Anti-Valentine's Day" cards at a local store. Believe it or not, mainstream card company, American Greetings, has come out with a new line of cards aimed at people who have dodged Cupid's arrow, and those who generally disdain Valentine's Day.

An example of an "Anti-Valentine's Day" card features a woman holding a bloodied heart.

"It's Valentine's Day, so here's a card with a heart inside," it reads on the front. On the inside it reads: "I'd tell you whose it is, but the less you know, the better."

A recent survey revealed that Valentine's Day is the second-biggest holiday behind Christmas for card makers. What's more, of the 190 million valentines sent each year--women buy 85%.

But, it's not just cards. There are "Anti-Valentine's Day" events taking place across the nation, including a "Love Bites the Hand that Feeds It" cabaret show by the Lesbian/Gay Chorus of San Francisco. Twinsburg High School in northeast Ohio is holding an Anti-Valentine's Day Edgar Allan Poe Festival, featuring a reading of the murderous "The Tell-Tale Heart." In downtown Cleveland, The Corner Alley, an upscale bowling alley and nightclub, is throwing a "Love ... Spare Me!" party promising nonromantic music and "love stinks" drink specials.

But, it doesn't stop there. Surf the web and you'll see that the Internet is filled with links to "Anti-Valentine's Day" message boards and products such as "Love Kills Slowly" shot glasses.

What about you? Will February 14th be a Happy Valentine's Day or a Happy Un-Valentine's Day?
