The Smurfs Hit the Big Time and the Big Screen Book You Won’t Find in Stores

The cute little blue guys with the high voices are headed to the big screen. The Smurfs, those lovable cartoon characters that had their own Saturday morning show on NBC from 1981 to 1990, are being resurrected for a new live action animated motion picture. According to reports, “Shrek 2” and “Shrek The Third” writers David Stem and David Weiss will pen the screenplay. This after their bosses at Columbia Pictures and Sony Pictures bought the rights to the Smurfs movie. Of their decision to purchase the rights to the popular cartoon Columbia execs told Variety, “The Smurfs are one … Continue reading

Happy Smurf Day!

Okay, I admit… I was into the Smurfs. The little blue guys captured my heart and a good chunk of my allowance as a kid. I owned a stuffed Smurfette and once spent all my birthday money on an entire set of 2-inch tall plastic Smurf figurines that included Papa Smurf, Handy Smurf, Jokey Smurf, Vanity Smurf, Farmer Smurf, Baker Smurf, even Sassette. So when I heard my former blue pals were celebrating the big 5-0 I immediately thought: I’m old! Fifty years and Smurfette doesn’t look a day over 18. It’s true; I saw her on TV last night … Continue reading

Interactive Family Trees For Kids To Use

Young children tend to want to try doing the things that they see their parents and grandparents doing. If you are a genealogist, then your child, or grandchild, will want to “help” you to do that. One way to let them do that is to find some fun, interactive, family trees that are designed for kids to fill in. Genealogists tend to want to share the things that they discover about their ancestors. Little kids tend to want to “help with” the activities they see their parents and grandparents doing. While it can be exciting to see that your family … Continue reading

What’s Old is New Again

There’s nothing quite like parents and children bonding over a bunch of tiny, shirtless blue creatures that fear the fangs of a mangy feline. Just when you thought you and your son would never share another thing in common–BAM!–the Smurfs are suddenly cool again, and all is right with the world. The Smurfs hit the pop culture scene in 1981, and more than 250 episodes later they grew into animated icons. This year Macy’s named the blue elf-like creatures as the store’s “Holiday Ambassadors” and a full-length Smurf movie will be released in 2011. All the hype surrounding Smurfette, Papa … Continue reading

Comic Strip Mom Prepares to Say Good-Bye

When I was a girl I adored reading The Family Circus comic strip. Each Sunday I would run outside to get the newspaper and eagerly flip to the comic section to see what Billy, Dolly, Jeffy and PJ were up to (my favorite was when creator Bil Keane would use thick dotted lines showing the characters’ paths through the neighborhood or house). The Family Circus family was much like my own. I could relate to Dolly being the only girl in a family with three pesky brothers. And like the cartoon clan my brothers and I would pile into our … Continue reading

RickRolling: What’s It All About?

Children of the 80’s rest easy – you are cool once again! Going along the theme that “what’s old is new again” the crazy kids of today have resurrected a most ancient fossil from the 80’s – Rick Astley. Back in the 80’s, we knew Rick was never gonna give us up, never gonna let us down, never gonna run around and desert us, never gonna make us cry, never gonna say goodbye, never gonna tell a lie and hurt us. But, he did say goodbye, along with other 80’s phenoms like Spandau Ballet and Kajagoogoo. Rick’s reign of pop … Continue reading

The Snowman Conspiracy (2)

What happens when a blogger starts noticing the snowmen. Is she right or just crazy? This is part two of The Snowman Conspiracy. Those are so easy to collect aren’t they? My collection first started with a Christmas gift from our in-laws. It is the cutest door sign that is personalized with our name. It features three snow people, two adults and a child, a representation of our family at the time. We still cherish it and display it, even though our family has grown from three members to five. After that, we just had to have some stuffed snow … Continue reading

Dispelling Racial Myths In The Media

The media is a powerful tool that affects children at an early age. Children receive a lot of information about the world from television, books, and movies. But what the media teaches is not always right or true. The media tends to stereotype people and races. In fact many children’s programs are built on stereotypes. Judith Myers-Walls professor of child development at Purdue University points out that the television show “Smurfs, for example, presents characters with one personality trait each, and they are named for that trait. The same is true of the Seven Dwarfs. In general, children’s programs deal … Continue reading
