Top Earning Country Music Acts

Forbes is at it again and it seems as if there is quite a bit of money to be made in country music. Forbes released its Top Earning Country Music Stars list and believe it or not, only one is a woman. Coming in at #9 (there is a tie for #7) is a pseudo-old timer – Alan Jackson. Last year, Jackson earned $10 million dollars, due in part to his tour with Brooks & Dunn. Don’t worry, we will see them later on in the list. George Strait, another old timer (well, compared to the rest on the list), … Continue reading

Dixie Chicks’ Natalie Maines Sued

The lead singer for the Dixie Chicks, Natalie Maines, is being sued by Terry Hobbs. Now, the name Terry Hobbs might not be familiar to you, but if I were to say the stepfather of Steven Branch, one of the victims of the West Memphis Three murders, you might remember his name. The West Memphis Three was a horrific murder case that happened just across the Mississippi River in 1993 when I lived in Memphis, Tennessee. Three eight year old boys (Steven Branch, Christopher Byers, and Michael Moore) were found dead in a Robin Hood Hills drainage canal. I won’t … Continue reading

This week, he is getting out of something else – his 24 year marriage. His lawyer, Bill Luckett, announced the Freeman and his wife Myrna Colley-Lee are divorcing. It was the week of July 5, 1998 – were you getting ready to party like it was 1999? Let’s see what was happening in the world of pop culture. In national news, Dow-Corning finally reached a settlement with women who had received silicone breast implants. The company was ordered to pay more than 170,000 women $3.2 billion dollars. In international news, Hong Kong’s Kai Tak airport closed after 73 years in service to make way for a new $20 billion dollar facility. Neil Young Gets His Own Spider

Hey, don’t step on that spider! It might be a Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi. A what? Yes, it is true – rocker Neil Young has had a spider named after him. Jason Bond, a biologist at East Carolina University, has discovered a new species of the trapdoor spider. When you discover a new species, you get the honor of naming it. Bond’s favorite musician is Neil Young, so voila – the Myrmekiaphila neilyoungi was born. Bond explained that while there are strict rules about how you name your new species, you could use any name you like as long as you follow … Continue reading

Rock Star Babylon: They Did What?

I love the “Babylon” books – those named, of course, after the biblical city Babylon. These books talk about the materialistic and hedonistic pleasures of – you guessed it – celebrities and musicians. The first one I read was “Hollywood Babylon: The Legendary Underground Classic of Hollywood’s Darkest and Best Kept Secrets” by Kenneth Anger. Ah, this one dished a lot of dirt about classic Hollywood stories: Errol Flynn’s brushes with under aged girls (which lead to brushes with the law), Rudolph Valentino (was the “Latin Lover” really gay?), the Fatty Arbuckle scandal (so much for “innocent until proven guilty”), … Continue reading

Greatest Musical Feuds Ever – Part 2

Okay, there is no way I could list all the great musical feuds of the past. After all, all that music and all those egos are just too explosive. But, here are a few more of the great ones: Notorious B.I.G. vs. 2Pac Sadly, we all know how this one turned out. When Tupac was shot, all eyes turned to Biggie since the two had had an ongoing feud in which, among other things, Tupac claimed to have had intimate relations with Biggie’s wife. Tupac was killed on the Vegas strip in 1996, Biggie was killed outside the Petersen Automotive … Continue reading

Greatest Musical Feuds Ever – Part 1

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could just all get along? Nah, what fun would that be? Here is a list of the best band squabbles ever. Some are between two bands and one is even innerbanditary (yes, I just made up that word), but all were played out in the public eye: Lynyrd Skynrd vs. Neil Young I guess Neil Young started this one. He wrote the song “Southern Man,” which contained lyrics that talked about crosses burning and paying back slaves for all the years of injustice done to them. Lynyrd Skynrd, a band almost synonymous with Southern … Continue reading
