Goodbye "Gilmore Girls"... Hello Maytag Repairman

Television is losing a fan favorite. "Gilmore Girls," a drama about an independent mother and daughter, is ending its run after seven seasons.

The show used to be one of the most popular sagas on the WB lineup, but last year it moved to the CW network (when WB and UPN merged) and ratings dipped.

Yesterday, network executives announced it will be pulling the plug on the series that some described as a show filled with "memorable and lovable characters."

The series stars Lauren Graham as single mom Lorelai Gilmore and Alexis Bledel as her equally sharp and beautiful daughter. The show spotlighted the relationship between the two and the struggles they faced growing up together, dating and finding their place in the world.

Television critics say the loss of the show's creator and executive producer may be to blame for its demise. (Amy Sherman-Palladino left after failing to come to terms with the studio on a new deal.)

As for what will ultimately happen with the show's characters, producers are keeping tight-lipped. However, in a recent interview with reporters Graham speculated about how the show will end.

"I care very much how the story ends," Graham said. "... It would be my worst nightmare if we end the show with a wedding. To me, the premise of the show was, 'What if your parent was your best friend?' That's the thing you leave people with, the strength of this family and this relationship."

While "Gilmore Girls" bids adieu to TV... a familiar face is getting set to say hello.

He's baaack! The Maytag Repairman is returning to the airwaves dealing with the same problem that has dogged him from the moment he made his debut decades ago---he's still sitting idle.

After a nationwide search that brought out 1,500 applicants the company says it has found its new Maytag Repairman. A real estate agent from Richmond, Virginia won the role as the lonely appliance service technician and will start appearing in new commercials beginning next week.

But, according to company executives, this time, instead of sitting in his shop and waiting in vain for the telephone to ring, the Maytag repairman will go out and search for other things that need fixing.
