A Snapshot of Health Before the Affordable Care Act

Sometime very soon, the Supreme Court will reveal its decision regarding the Affordable Care Act. Soon, Americans will know what the fate of their current health insurance plans will be. There are those who are strongly opposed to the ACA. Here is a brief reminder of what health care was like for most Americans before the ACA existed. The Affordable Care Act was signed by President Obama on March 23, 2010. Since then, Americans have seen many good things happen as a result of the changes that were brought about by the regulations in the Affordable Care Act. We, as … Continue reading

Before You Leave for Summer Vacation 2

Your summer vacation can be even more relaxing when you know that everything is well at home. Yesterday, I wrote about how to prepare your home for vacation, and now I’d like to continue that list of things that you need to do before you leave. Take a good look at everything in your home that is plugged in. Unplug small appliances, decorative lamps and fountains and anything that does not need electricity while you are gone. This will cut down on the risk of an electrical fire and save you money on electricity costs while you are gone. In … Continue reading

Before You Leave for Summer Vacation

Summer is finally here, and it is time to start taking those family vacations. Before you leave on vacation, there are a few things that you should do around your home to make sure that you will have a pleasant return when your vacation is over. To keep your home and your things safe while you are gone, lock all of the windows and doors but leave some shades and curtains open. Get and set some automatic timers for lights in your house. The best ones are those that can be set to turn on and off at different times … Continue reading

Think Before You Lend Money to a Friend

Nothing can come between friends faster than money except, perhaps romantic issues but that’s a different topic for another forum. There are many ways that money can create tension between friends, and sometimes the issues are so serious that friendships end because of them. Of course you value your friendships, but there are many good reasons that you and your friends should keep your finances mostly to yourselves. I am not suggesting that you never talk to your friends about money, because friends can often be great not only for listening but for helping you find new solutions or different … Continue reading

100 Things Every Marriage Should Experience Before Dying

Have you heard of the book 100 Things To Do Before You Die? (Not to be confused with 101 Things To Do Before You Die, which, while the title’s similar, is an entirely different beast of a book and was written by a different author, Richard Horne.) Dave Freeman, one of the 100’s co-authors, died this past August. I’ve never read the book, but I certainly got a sense of the man. Here’s a snippet from his obituary in the Los Angeles Times: The “100 Things” approach later swept the publishing industry, said Neil Teplica, who wrote the book with … Continue reading

Lose 20 Pounds of Fat in 30 Days

Timothy Ferriss, author of The 4-Hour Work Week, makes everything look possible. In fact, if you visit his website, you’ll see that he breaks it down and darned near anything is possible if you follow his example! I haven’t yet tried his method of losing 20 pounds of fat in 30 days, although I should. (Pesky pregnancy fat plagues me.) Given his other ideas, I am inclined to think he may have some good ideas about how to do this so let’s take a look at his proposal, shall we? He claims that, in the last six weeks, he has … Continue reading

Gone Before 30

As the world still tries to recover from Heath Ledger’s untimely death, some are remembering others who died young. ABC News did a segment on stars that died before they reached age 30. I have already blogged about many of the people on the list. Some died because of violence such as the Notorious B.I.G and Tupac Shakur. Some took their own lives like Kurt Cobain. Still others succumbed to drug use like Brad Renfro, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and River Phoenix. When I first heard of Heath’s death, I immediately thought of River. Talented yet troubled, both gave us … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 13:30-35

Nephi is having a vision which details the fate of his seed and that of his brethren. He has seen the coming of the Bible and of Christopher Columbus to the Americas, and now he is seeing the rising up of America and the growth of the nation. 30. Nevertheless, thou beholdest that the Gentiles who have gone forth out of captivity, and have been lifted up by the power of God above all other nations, upon the face of the land which is choice above all other lands, which is the land that the Lord God hath covenanted with … Continue reading

Before I Wake – Dee Henderson

The huge Dee Henderson fan that I am, I looked forward to the release of “Before I Wake” most anxiously and have been reading it every night before bed for the last week. Rae Gabriella was a police officer before she joined the FBI. Bruce Chapel, her boyfriend, was sad to see her move to Washington DC in the course of her work, but he knew it would be good for her career. Eleven years have gone by since then, and Rae has resigned from the FBI due to a case gone terribly wrong. When Bruce contacts her and asks … Continue reading
