Mothers: A Sorority of Complainers?

(Sweeter than a Dyson.) You are looking at one of the lovely Mother’s Day gifts I was presented with yesterday by my adorable daughter. As you can tell, it can’t be used to suck up strewn Cheerios from hardwood or carpeted floors, nor can it separate dust by cyclonic action and spin it out of the airstream with the simple press of a button. Also, it doesn’t rhyme with Dyson. Regardless, I love my card, especially the handwritten note scribbled in bright pink crayon inside. It will forever help me remember Mother’s Day 2012. The holiday has come and gone … Continue reading

Forever 27: The Others

So we know that Robert Johnson, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Janis Joplin, and Kurt Cobain all died tragically at the age of 27. But there are more members of the infamous club who never reached the superstardom of the ones I have already mentioned. Here is a list of the other musicians who died at the age of 27: Louis Chauvin Chauvin was a ragtime musician who died in 1908 of syphilis. Jesse Belvin Belvin was an R&B singer/songwriter who died in a car accident in 1960. His biggest hit was “Goodnight My Love,” which reached #7 on … Continue reading

Forever 27: Janis Joplin

In October 1970, the world was still reeling over the death of Jimi Hendrix. How such a wonderfully talented guitarist could be taken so suddenly was shocking. But, by the end of the month, the country would be mourning the death of another great rock icon. Janis Joplin was shunned by the others in high school. While it may have bothered her, she had more on her mind. She was already listening to blues greats like Leadbelly, Bessie Smith, Odetta, and Big Mama Thornton. Soon, Janis began to sing both blues and folk music, playing small coffee houses and bars … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2007 Week 27

This week’s dinner discussions are based on lesson twenty seven in the manual for those who are over the age of eight. The Nursery and Junior Primary lessons are based on lesson twenty six. You may need to adjust this schedule to match your ward’s schedule. As you take the time to reinforce the principles you children learned at church this week, it is important that you bear your testimony on the lessons. This will help your children to recognize and feel the spirit. If you have a child in Nursery or Sunbeams he learned that families can be together … Continue reading

Teenage Pregnancy

One of the statistics that everyone is happy to trot out against single parenting is teenage pregnancy. Many single mothers were teenagers themselves which puts their daughters at higher risk, and being raised in a single parent family seems to raise the risk in general. Girls from intact families get pregnant as teenagers as well, but since no one is pointing the finger at their families it’s just us, single moms who are told our daughters will be another statistic. What can you do? How can you help your daughter make better choices when you may be guilty of those … Continue reading

Marriage and Happiness – is it possible?

While divorce is nothing new in this country, when I read about long-term marriages coming to an end, ala the Gore’s, the Schwarzenegger’s, and the Edward’s, I start to wonder if it is even possible to stay married forever anymore. I hear a lot about the “old days’, but I have a lot of grandparents due to multiple re-marriages. My great-grandparents remained together, but one spouse died long before the other. So maybe those that stay married forever over a real long time period are the anomalies. Maybe now that we live longer and more women are able to support … Continue reading

Baby Belly Days

Certain days in my life can provoke more thought and emotion than others. This is today. Before I had my baby years ago, I was quite thin. I was also younger and taller. I wore a size 8, which is like the equivalent now to about a size 4. I felt pretty good about myself. I discovered that soon my belly would be expanding and I was ecstatic. I had been waiting for what seemed like forever to me. I was very careful about what I ate. I ate healthy, exercised and made sure that I did not gain too … Continue reading

The Legal Woes of Courtney Love and Maradona

I was reading today about how Courtney Love has been sued because of her online rants. Oh no, I thought to myself! Maybe I should be more careful when blogging because I know at times I can be harsh. But, then I read exactly what Courtney had been saying and I think I am doing okay. Love is being sued by fashion designer Dawn Simorangkir, aka the Boudoir Queen. Simorangkir is seeking damages for libel, invasion of privacy, intentional interference with her business, infliction of emotional distress and breach of contract. Simorangkir also says that Love has never paid her … Continue reading

Celebrity Good Week/Bad Week News

More ups and downs for our favorite celebs this week: It’s been a bad week for. . .Lindsay Lohan The young actress has lamented to Interview magazine about how she envies the career of her peer Scarlett Johansson. Lindsay said what has hurt her most is that “I work just as hard as any other actress around my age, like Scarlett Johansson, but I just don’t get the opportunities that they get because people are so distracted by the mess that I created in my life. But that doesn’t mean it’s going to last forever.” Would that be Scarlett Johansson … Continue reading
