Fighting Against Jealousy

It’s easy to look around and find someone who appears to have it better than you. You see your friends getting married and having babies and wonder how you ended up with the short end of the stick. You may even be experiencing this within your own family. My little sister got married about six months after my divorce. It was hard to watch her starting her own little family when mine had just fallen apart. I often found myself feeling jealous of those around me. So many appeared to have a perfect family and I was struggling to be … Continue reading

Blundering into Fights — And Getting Back Out

Do you ever sometimes feel like you’ve somehow stumbled into a fight and are not sure how it happened? When we go looking to pick fights we know what we’re up to, but sometimes it seems like all of a sudden we’re fighting with someone and we’re not exactly sure how it happened. This can happen between any two people but it’s certainly common in a marriage, just given that married couples are two people who spend so much time together. The silver lining of picked fights is that, although when we go looking to start one we’re not exactly … Continue reading

Back-to-School Breakfast Battle

Along with fighting about what to wear, arguing about acceptable hairstyles, and nagging about homework, moms face another daily back-to-school battle with straggler kids: breakfast. My soon-to-be second grader is used to taking her sweet time at the breakfast table methodically chipping away at her favorite dishes. Her leisurely pace is not an issue on weekends and during the summer months, but once the school year starts her routine gets a serious jolt. I’ve told her a thousand times that she has two choices when it comes to back-to-school breakfasts: She can either wake-up 30 minutes earlier than normal, and … Continue reading

Fighting the Cabin Fever

While it used to be that I could never sit still or stay in for long, these days I actually look forward to those winter snowed in days when everyone is pretty much stuck indoors. Far from the original cabin fever that I used to feel, forced to stay in with no way to g, actually helps things slow down and can even be fun. When the winter months roll around, I try to make sure that we are prepared with the basics. This not only means a couple of days of food, but also entertainment and projects. Sure the … Continue reading

Erin Brochovich is Back in Hinkley, California

Do you remember the film Erin Brockovich from a few years back? Julia Roberts won an Oscar for playing the feisty legal clerk Erin Brockovich who took on Pacific Gas & Electric (PG&E). The utility company was accused of contaminating the water in Hinkley, California and Brockovich doggedly pursued the case against them. At the end of the movie, the case was settled by PG&E and the residents of Hinkley were awarded $333 million and were given a pledge by PG&E to clean up the contamination. Queue credits and angelic music to end this story. Wait a second, you had … Continue reading

Homeschool Parents in Germany Still Fighting Nazi Laws

“The ‘Schulpflicht’ – the laws that require school attendance – are on the books in the German states, and have been traced back to the ‘Reichsschulpflicht Gesetz’ [federal compulsory attendance laws] which was passed in 1938. Except for the removal of references to the Nazi party, these laws are identical or substantially the same as the laws passed by Hitler’s government, criminalizing parents who keep their children home for school.” This is what the parents Juergen and Rosemarie Dudeck of Archfeld Germany have alleged in court in their fight to homeschool their children. To date they have been wholly unsuccessful … Continue reading

Fighting Pet Stains with Pee-Pee

I am the owner of two adorable Miniature Schnauzers with poor home training. I guess it’s my fault for not doing a better job, but technically the dogs belong to my son and husband, so I can say it’s their fault! Anyway I came home from vacation to a couple of horrible stains. It seems the dogs got out of the kennel when the pet sitter was not here and make a horrible mess in the dining room. Yes, they had a bad bowel movement in the dining room. They also marked a few of my dining chairs leaving some … Continue reading

How to Keep Toddlers from Fighting

When there are two toddlers fighting over a toy, things can get a bit dicey. You want to make sure that your child isn’t the aggressor, while at the same time ensuring that your child isn’t getting abused by the other child. The secret to sorting it out is to determine aggressiveness versus assertiveness. With aggression, the toddler is infringing on someone else’s territory. The other child may have been happily playing with the toy when your child comes out of nowhere, sees that it looks interesting and attempts to snatch it away for himself. With assertiveness, your child may … Continue reading

Rules of Fighting

In some previous articles, we have discussed how all couples fight. There will be disagreements in every kind of relationship. No matter if the two are family members, a couple, or coworkers, they are sure to have differences that arise on occasion. The success in a relationship is all about how these differences and arguments are handled. Many couple or marriage therapists will actually agree that arguments are healthy for a relationship when carried out in the right way. It is when partners bottle things up and do not speak out that tension can grow. There are some rules that … Continue reading

Fighting Back—Disgruntled Passenger Sues Airline for $1 Million

If I were a lawyer I might have done the same. Possibly. In a move that should come as no surprise to any passenger who has experienced a travel nightmare courtesy of a commercial airline, a New York lawyer just announced that he is suing Delta Air Lines for $1 million. According to court documents, Richard Roth claims that the carrier ruined his family’s vacation by leaving them stranded in an airport for days and treating them like second-class citizens. Roth, who filed the lawsuit on behalf of himself and his mother, said he planned a Christmas 2007 trip to … Continue reading
