Confessions of a Foodie Mom, Week Three

I’m down a pound this week! (For a few days I was worried that I wouldn’t have any weight loss to report!) It’s been a weird couple of weeks—I’ve been in a lot of pain so I haven’t been cooking much, and exercising has been harder. Two things which have made it easier are: exercise, no matter how little, and keeping the fridge stocked with hard-boiled eggs, lots of fruits, and low-fat string cheese. I also like to stock V-8 Juice so I can get some veggie servings even when we run out of salad fixings and baby carrots. In … Continue reading

As I sit here looking out my window at the backyard, the birds are hovering in the pine tree against a strong wind and steady rain. The temperature is chilly today, and the calendar reminds me that we have left October behind. October 1st Buy a Home for $1.75 It seems that the housing crisis has made some interesting news lately. Home Month in Review: September 2008 Has the weather turned cooler now that September has passed? Pretty soon, it will be time to get that heat turned back on! Breast Cancer Awareness Month may still be 25 weeks away, but Mother’s Day is right around the corner and if you are looking for a charitable gift to give the all-deserving women in your life you are in luck. The jersey heart dress that recently made headlines during New York’s Fashion Week is now available online. Sass & Bide’s “The Mad Ones” dress is selling for $170 and all proceeds from the tie-dyed, sequin-embellished frock will go directly to Fashion Targets Breast Cancer, a charity that assists women living with breast cancer. Hollywood stars including “Mission Impossible II” actress Michelle … Continue reading

Fashion Files: Designer Grocery Bags

Who knew going to the market could be so fashionable? Not me. I’m the mom at the market schlepping around a diaper bag or industrial-sized purse staring at the put-together female shoppers (yes, apparently there are some women who actually wear make up to the market) toting their environmentally friendly reusable shopping bags. Those canvas shopping bags have long been associated with “crunchy-granola”-types, who as it turns out, were way ahead of the times. Now, it’s hip to be environmentally aware and the reusable shopping bags are commonplace (even among the preppy-with-pearls set). But, now, brace yourself ladies, the market … Continue reading

Calling The Fashion Police

The fashion police are coming to the rescue—of a distant cousin. Scotland Yard is getting a visit from the fashionably fit. In what some are calling a “historic moment” the iconic bobby’s uniform worn by members of the British police force is getting a makeover. According to the Metropolitan Police, the force has recruited students from the London College of Fashion, whose alumni includes celebrity shoemaker Jimmy Choo, to help redesign the uniform for the 21st century. For years police officers have complained that their foot-high helmets topple when they chase suspects. Proving that while the uniforms may be stylish … Continue reading

Bridal Fashion Week—How To Look Like A Disney Princess Bride

Here we go again. The Big Apple is hunkering down for yet another Fashion Week (to read my series on Fashion Week 2007 click here). But this time designers are catering to a certain clientele—brides-to-be. Bridal Fashion Week kicks off in Manhattan on Sunday, but some fashion editors are already offering their picks on what may prove to be runway standouts. If you have always dreamed of looking like a princess on your wedding day then you are in luck… especially if the princess you’ve dreamt of looking like is from a Disney movie. Oh, no they didn’t! Oh, YES … Continue reading

Top 10 Ways to Tell Your LDS Husband Doesn’t Get Being Pregnant

Maybe it is because I’m nine months pregnant, but I am currently very aware that no man will ever quite understand what it means to be pregnant. Oh, they can be sympathetic, supportive, and uplifting, but even the most ideal husband can’t relate to the various physical “joys” that come with carrying a child. Here are some great signs that even your fantastically spiritual Latter-day Saint husband just doesn’t understand. 1. In your last trimester, when you feel too exhausted to move, he asks you to substitute for several weeks as a Primary or Sunday school teacher. 2. He doesn’t … Continue reading

Fashion Week: It Ain’t Over Till It’s Over

Tina Turner was there, as was famed film director Robert Wilson, and scores of other fashionistas. Fashion Week has moved to Milan… and trendsetters are jostling for front row seats at some of the week’s most highly anticipated shows, including Giorgio Armani’s. The famed designer drew a bevy of VIP’s when he showed off his Fall/Winter 2007 collection on Monday. His creations focused on muted shades with a myriad of glistening sequins. Fashion editors call Armani’s collection, “a dazzling display of feminine tones, from sparkling ballerina footwear to knitted caps dotted with dewdrop crystals.” Noticeably missing from the designer’s collection: … Continue reading
