I have raved about the upscale luggage manufacturer Tumi in previous travel blogs; certainly my adoration for their sturdy and highly functional suitcases is well documented. So, imagine my surprise when I heard the luggage purveyor plans to enter the women's fashion accessories market early next year. Watch out Tod's, I guarantee Tumi will be giving you a run for your money.

I love a good bag. What woman doesn't? Currently, I am engaged in a battle with myself to resist spending more money on the latest, greatest, and cutest diaper bags. Tumi hasn't entered the diaper bag market yet (thus sparing me from going deeper into debt), but their new women's collection is already making headlines. The company's spring collections-Signature, Elements and Vista-will hit stores in January 2007. Tumi representatives say the line is aimed at "bridging the business/fashion gap via streamlined, functional silhouettes in the company's signature ballistic nylon, along with more stylish satchels and hobo bags trimmed in earth-toned leather."

What's more, the company says it is not trading in their signature metal hardware and their interior bubble pack design in an effort to enhance their new collection. Rather, the women's collection will feature all of Tumi's signature details with a twist. For example, bags will be given a new oval shape to enhance the "femininity factor." Tumi designers say you can look for a brand new series of "practical but stylish" handbags and wallets in three types of leather, including pebbled skins, high-shine polished leather, and possibly even patent. Prices will range from $50 for a leather card case to $350 for a handbag to $695 for a 26-inch wheeled suitcase from the Signature collection.

The core of Tumi's business is business and travel bags, this new venture into the world of fashion just means that I will have to practice more willpower when I enter one of their stores.
