Fall Fashion Preview---Short Skirts and "Acid" Accents

With temperatures hovering near MINUS 15 degrees Fahrenheit (at least here in the Upper Midwest) it's hard to think about wearing short, flirty skirts. But, short hemlines are one of the first trends to emerge from New York Fashion Week. The annual event, currently underway in the Big Apple, is drawing huge crowds of celebrities, their stylists, fashion editors and retailers.

In a previous blog I listed some of the first must-have items to emerge from the runways. This blogs recaps some of the other trends revealed at yesterday's shows.

While the rest of the country was prepping to watch grown men chase after a ball in form-fitting uniforms, fashionistas in New York were concentrating on unique creations by big name designers like Diane von Furstenberg (creator of the classic wrap dress) and Donna Karan.

On Sunday, Von Furstenberg unveiled her "La Movida" collection inspired by the cultural landscape of Spain. The designer told reporters that her prints were done "in reverence to Gaudi, Goya and Miro." For instance, her Miro wool dress was a loose T-shirt style in black punctuated by a bold red circle.

Another crowd favorite was Von Furstenberg's V-neck tunic dress. It was worn by itself on the runway but you'd probably want to pair it with tights or leggings before donning it on the street. The designer also received applause from audience members for her open portrait-collar coats in metallic fabrics.

Meanwhile, Donna Karan's DKNY collection made headlines for seamlessly blending both daytime and nighttime looks into one outfit. For example, the designer included a hint of sparkle under skirt suits with bouncy flip hems, and added a playful heart print used on bow blouses to soften an outfit of tailored separates.

Other hot trends included chunky cardigans in black and white, tweed wide-leg trousers, and ruffled miniskirts. For color, Karan told reporters she stuck with black and gray, which she accented with bright spots of berry, violet and "acid" - a sort of greenish yellow. Berry-colored cashmeres and double-faced apple green wool coats were also crowd favorites.

What do you think? Will any of these looks find their way to your closet?
