Get Healthy Now – Part 2

Still in need of some get healthy now tips? Here are a few more to kick-start you on your way to a better you: Eat more fruits and veggies! Every meal should contain at least one fruit and vegetable. We are supposed to have between 2 and 4 servings of fruit each day and between 3 and 5 servings of vegetables each day. Add up what you’ve had on any given day and it might frighten you (it has me!). Dry-brush your teeth. It may sound odd, but just 30 seconds of dry brushing your teeth (no toothpaste) can cut … Continue reading

Epic Mickey: Fun, But Not “Epic”

“Epic Mickey” for the Wii is a fun game that, despite its enjoyable game play, still manages to be mostly a tale of wasted potential. I say this from two points of view: both as a gamer thrilled by the early edgy concept art, and as a blogger for a family website determining its appropriateness for children. Nothing in “Epic Mickey” should frighten either the kids playing the game or their parents questioning its suitability. It’s not too scary or violent; in fact, the morality system allows for a non-violent option when facing enemies. Mickey wields a paintbrush and with … Continue reading

Teens Are Not Hopeless

One of the pleasures that I get in writing for Families on teen issues is being able to share many of my positive experiences. Too often teens get a bad rap. We hear all of the negative things about teens and so many parents go into those years with a sense of dread. I was forewarned before I became a parent of teenagers. It was made to sound like the worst years of my life were just ahead. It would be nothing but trouble and misery. However I have found raising teenagers to be the very opposite. I think it … Continue reading

Dream Job or Dream Girl? – A Positive Example of Men on TV

On one of my blogs a while back, Tristi had made a comment about how she’d noticed a trend, especially in the media, towards belittling men. In another blog, I wondered if she might be on to something –and if maybe I’d been subliminally affected by it and that’s why I was prone to assuming most men were philanderers at heart. But perhaps this media influence (because, I’ll shamefully admit, I watch way too much TV) might also account for some other thoughts I have about men. One’s I expressed in my “Men: The Weaker Sex?” blog. Bothered That blog … Continue reading

Author Interview – Barry K. Phillips

Today we are joined by Barry K. Phillips, author of the new nonfiction book “Caught in the Headlights: Ten Lessons Learned the Hard Way.” I reviewed this book earlier today and you can read that review here. Barry, thank you for taking the time out to be with us today. Your book is about the important lessons you’ve learned in your life. Out of these lessons, is there one that you would say is more important than all the rest of them? Well, that’s a tough one. The lesson about not looking for happiness is probably the most important, because … Continue reading

Medical Employees Axed for Spears Snooping

I guess the temptation was just too much… The allure of knowing all about Britney Spears has landed more than two-dozen medical employees, including doctors in hot water. In fact, at least 25 staff members at the UCLA Medical Center are either looking for new jobs this morning or are enduring severe disciplinary actions, according to the Los Angeles Times. The newspaper is reporting that the breaches occurred during Spears most recent hospital stay. (The 26-year-old troubled pop star was involuntary hospitalized at the medical center’s psych ward for one week beginning January 31st.) According to the L.A. Times article, … Continue reading

Dr. Phil Can’t Keep His Mouth Shut

I really had no opinion of Dr. Phil McGraw prior to his involvement in the Britney Spears fiasco. And to be honest, I still remain indifferent about his show and really could care less about how he lives his life; however, I do feel compelled to discuss his most recent displays of questionable behavior. I’d call it hypocrisy, but the good doctor would likely disagree. Take a look at Dr. Phil’s latest antics and you make the call: By know you know that last month Dr. Phil was contacted by Britney Spears’s family who asked if he would please meet … Continue reading

Oprah Furious with Phil

I told you Dr. Phil has no friends… Just days after Dr. Phil McGraw’s pathetic attempt at a public apology regarding his role in the Britney Spears brouhaha hit airways the TV shrink’s famous boss is reportedly steaming. Like a bad rash this story just won’t go away. Today, even more fallout from Dr. Phil’s controversial meeting with the 26-year-old trainwreck is making headlines and this time it centers on McGraw’s gravy train conductor Oprah Winfrey. First Brit’s parents publicly reamed the syndicated talk show host for blabbing to the media about his visit to the derailed singer while she … Continue reading

More Dirt on the Dr. Phil Fiasco

In a previous blog I mentioned that talk show host Dr. Phil McGraw is reportedly being investigated by the California Board of Psychology for practicing without a license while visiting Britney Spears’ after her latest meltdown. Well, now it appears the in your face Texan may be getting off the hook. While California authorities are mandated to investigate any time a complaint is filed (in Dr. Phil’s case a complaint was filed last week by a practicing shrink who alleges McGraw, who does not hold a license to practice psychology in California, violated doctor-patient privilege by discussing the derailed singer’s … Continue reading

Dr. Phil Has No Friends

Dr. Phil may be ruing the day he even heard the name Britney Spears. Since getting involved in the trainwreck’s life not only has he been sanctioned by his “colleagues,” the outspoken Texas transplant is learning he has no friends in Hollywood. First thing’s first—-it’s important to note that despite all the hoopla surrounding the TV shrink giving advice to the Spears family, and then issuing a statement regarding the derailed singer’s psychological condition, documents prove Phillip McGraw has never been licensed to practice in California, and he retired his Texas license in 2006. With that said, TMZ.com is reporting … Continue reading
