Writer Dominick Dunne Dead at 83

While the country is still recovering from the death of the Lion of the Senate, Ted Kennedy, another celebrity died without much fanfare. Writer Dominick Dunne passed away yesterday at the age of 83 from bladder cancer. Dunne was cited on CNN as a “celebrity crime writer,” but he actually didn’t start crime writing until after a personal tragedy occurred. Dunne worked as a movie producer in Hollywood in the ‘60s, but addiction to alcohol and drugs caused him to flee the town. In case you missed it in the news, O.J. Simpson is back in court, this time for reportedly robbing memorabilia collectors at gunpoint in Las Vegas. O.J. has been charged with criminal conspiracy, kidnapping, assault, robbery, use of a deadly weapon, and just generally being a despicable human being. Okay, I embellished a bit on that last charge. Surely you remember the ‘90s circus that was the O.J. Simpson murder trial. The infamous white Bronco freeway chase that lasted an hour and a half and was watched by most of America. The glove and Johnnie Cockran’s famous “if it doesn’t fit, you must acquit” statement. The racist remarks made by LAPD officer Mark Fuhrmann. The acquittal followed by the guilty verdict in the civil suit of the deaths of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.
