Making History: “The Simpsons” and Prince

Who knew a show about a yellow-skinned family with more attitude than brains would wind up making television history? The creator of “The Simpsons,” Matt Groening, says even he is stunned by the impact his animated clan has made on society… and they’re not done yet. According to reports, Fox plans to renew “The Simpsons” for another two seasons, which will secure its place as TV’s longest-running primetime series. The show is currently in its 20th season and has already tied record-holder “Gunsmoke,” which aired for two decades on CBS before ending in 1975. Groening says that by including the … Continue reading

Pop Culture Updates: Harry, Sampson and “The Simpsons”

JUST WILD ABOUT HARRY We all know by now that Harry Potter, the fictional boy wizard, is a pop culture icon. “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” smashed all sales records this weekend (8.3 million copies of the book were sold in the first 24 hours). But, there’s another record the book has earned that you may not have heard about. According to the National Braille Press, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” was made available to the blind at the same time sighted readers could purchase their print versions. The Boston-based publisher says that is an extremely rare occurrence … Continue reading

Ringo Starr to Fans: Leave Me Alone!

Attention Ringo Starr fans: the former Beatles drummer wants you to bug off. That means stop writing to him, stop asking him for autographs, and for Heavens sake, quit requesting that he send you a signed photo. I’m not kidding. After nearly 50 years basking in the media spotlight and being worshipped by fans around the world the musician says he wants his life back. His fan-free life back. This fan fatigue is apparently what led the 68-year-old to post a very serious video message on his website laying down the law for fans. According to the front man of … Continue reading

Vince McMahon wants to make you a Millionaire and a lot of Dough for a lot of “D’Oh!”

But it won’t be easy. First of all, you really should be a fan of pro wrestling because you are going to need to sit through hours of World Wrestling Entertainment matches to obtain details on how to rake in the dough. But, that’s all part of Vince McMahon’s plan to boost ratings for WWE’s “Monday Night Raw.” Last week WWE’s head honcho said he would give away $1 million of his own money to viewers, but he didn’t specify exactly how the funds would be distributed. At this point all we know is that the cash is part of … Continue reading

Simpson Updates: Can’t Keep Homer Down and Can’t Keep Ashlee’s Mouth Shut

CAN’T KEEP HOMER DOWN Maybe Homer, Bart and Lisa are part cat because they’re baaack on Venezuelan TV after being axed less than two weeks ago. According to local news reports, “The Simpsons” animated series has returned to Venezuelan TV in a new time slot after regulators yanked it from the air earlier this month. The long running Fox series returned to Venezuelan airwaves Wednesday at 7 p.m. and will now be shown at that time each week. It was airing each day at 11 a.m. before executives with the National Telecommunications Commission said it violated regulations to protect children. … Continue reading

D’Oh! Bart Gets Dumped and Heidi Jumps Ship

It’s bye-bye Bart in Venezuela. After getting the boot from China a TV channel in Venezuela has also pulled the plug on “The Simpsons” because it contains material officials say is inappropriate for children. According to local newspapers, the decision came after the country’s National Telecommunications Commission received dozens of angry complaints from viewers, who were distressed that the animated series was being aired daily during an 11 a.m. time slot. A representative from Televen TV, which aired “The Simpsons,” said the show had the highest levels of viewership for that time slot in the history of the channel, but … Continue reading

Make Your Summer Travel Plans Now

Now that you know where to go in San Diego if you are working on a limited travel budget let’s move to the other side of the country. I’m shining the summer travel spotlight on Florida today—-specifically Orlando. Personally, I place Florida in the same category as Hawaii. Neither (in my opinion) needs much in the way of an introduction or any quirky tidbits on why you should visit the area at least once in your life. However, I think it is helpful (especially for repeat visitors) to stay on top of any new attractions the area has to offer. … Continue reading

TV Update—-What You Will and Won’t Be Seeing This Fall

You know you’ve hit the big time when you are asked to make a cameo on Fox network’s “The Simpsons.” At least that’s the general consensus among most of Hollywood’s elite. But, apparently, some outside the industry do not share the sentiment. Namely, British Prime Minister Gordon Brown. According to news reports, the political powerhouse has turned down an invitation to visit Bart, Homer and Lisa in Springfield. Critics say the TV appearance would have helped shake the prime minister’s dour image, but alas, Brown decided against following in his predecessor Tony Blair’s footsteps and will not share a donut … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits: End of An Era

I’ve told you about my childhood crush on Michael J. Fox (and Jason Bateman and Ricky Schroeder and…) in previous blogs. It’s tue; I’ve seen “Back to the Future” more times than most people have gone out to eat dinner. Which is why I was saddened to learn that the Universal Studios Hollywood ride based on the film trilogy that starred my beloved Michael (is a) Fox is officially a part of history. The ride took its final passengers yesterday and now is relegated to the past. (Sniff, sniff.) What’s even sadder is that the ride was closed to make … Continue reading
