Dick Clark Dies at 82

The world’s oldest teenager died today. Consummate host/producer/television and radio personality Dick Clark passed away today at the age of 82 from what TMZ is reporting as a “massive heart attack.” My first thought was “He was only 82?” It seems as if he packed twice as many years of living into that time. Clark began working right out of high school as an office worker at a radio station in NY owned by his uncle and managed by his father. He quickly fell into replacing the vacationing weatherman and doing station breaks. He bounced around radio and television stations … Continue reading

Jonas Brothers’ Plan to Ring in 2009 and Fran Drescher vs. Caroline Kennedy

Those hip, hot and happening brothers, who make wearing a purity ring oh-so cool, will be rocking in 2009 from Times Square. ABC just announced that the Jonas Brothers will be joining Ryan Seacrest and a slew of other stars on “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve.” Taylor Swift and Lionel Richie will join the mega-hot singing siblings live from New York while Fergie will host segments of the show originating from Hollywood. Joining the duchess in Tinseltown will be Natasha Bedingfield, Fall Out Boy, Jesse McCartney, Ne-Yo, Pussycat Dolls, Solange and Robin Thicke. ABC execs also announced that singer … Continue reading

Where Are You Ringing in 2008?

There was a time in my life when there was no place I would rather ring in the new year than New York’s Times Square. I remember as a child watching the glittering ball descend on the Big Apple on TV from my home on the Big Island of Hawaii (five hours after it had actually dropped). I spent years dreaming of being in the midst of the pomp and pageantry. That was a few decades ago, and now Times Square is probably the last place on the planet I’d want to be at 11:59:59 p.m. on New Year’s Eve. … Continue reading

Celebrity Tragedy: Alan Freed

In case you have not noticed, Michele and I are the yin yang of the pop culture blog. She usually concentrates on cheery stories about weddings and babies while I tend to focus a bit on the darker side of fame. I mean, after all, you have to admit that Hollywood has its share of tragedies. But, all areas of fame have their dark side, their tragic stories of the good gone bad. Such is the case of 50’s super disc jockey Alan Freed. I had briefly mentioned Alan Freed when I was talking about Jesse Blevin, a singer who … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates: New Gig(s), New Home, and a Hot New Couple

Does Ryan Seacrest ever sleep? The “American Idol” host took over the title of “Hardest Working Man In Show Business” from Regis Philbin (who took it over from Dick Clark) months ago, and it looks like he’s living up to the billing. (If he’s not the “hardest” working man in show business then he certainly is one of the busiest.) Seacrest has just been tapped to host the 59th Primetime Emmy Awards, which is scheduled to air next month. The announcement comes on the heels of a prior declaration that Seacrest got the job of hosting the Super Bowl pre-game … Continue reading

A Unique Auction

Libby and I have written a number of blogs on auctions. They seem to be in the news more and more these days. It has almost gotten to the point where not a day goes by that some celebrity isn’t making headlines for putting his or her personal items on the block. But, today’s auction blog is a bit different. It isn’t about stars making money from selling diamond rings or gowns worn to the Academy Awards; rather this auction blog is dedicated to the sale of far less glamorous items–Web addresses. Hundreds of Internet domain names were recently up … Continue reading
