For the Strength of Youth Series: Music and Dancing

Ahh, the memories of stake youth dances and the Book of Mormon distance between partners. Most of the time I didn’t have a particular boy I liked, so these dances were most often a time to go with my group of friends and have fun being silly and wearing funny clothes just for kicks. A bit nerdy, perhaps, but good clean fun. The For the Strength of Youth pamphlet encourages youth (and adults alike) to choose good music and dancing for entertainment and to help you become closer to the Lord. Music is a fabulous way to share how you … Continue reading

Dancing with Same-Sex Partners

Prior to Steve Guttenberg getting the boot from this season’s “Dancing with the Stars” he took to the dance floor with his partner Anna Trebunskaya’s husband, pro dancer Jonathan Roberts for a tango the show’s host affectionately referred to as the “MAN-go.” In the days since, Guttenberg and Roberts’ “man-go” clip has received more than a million hits on ABC.com and YouTube and has sparked a number of lively debates in cyberspace (and beyond) regarding the idea of having the popular dancing competition include same-sex partners. In fact, when a gay/lesbian/transgender group recently proposed bending the gender rules on the … Continue reading

Deputy Assistant Secretary of State International Organizations Suzanne Nossel called it “a key part in setting a new norm that gay rights are human rights and that that has to be accepted globally.” President Barack Obama called it a “significant milestone in the long struggle for [LGBT] equality.” The resolution was introduced by South Africa. What makes it so ground breaking? It is the first ever U.N. resolution that includes equal … Continue reading

Strictly Ballroom (1992)

“Strictly Ballroom” is an Australian-made spoof of the ballroom dance arena, and it’s a lot of fun. Scott Hastings (Paul Mercurio) is the son of a champion ballroom dancer, and she has raised him with the same ambitions. He wants to win the championship, but along the way, he started experimenting with steps of his own that weren’t strictly ballroom, and he demonstrated them at a lower-level meet, throwing the judges into a tizzy, nearly giving his mother a nervous breakdown, and causing everyone to wonder about the future of the sport. Liz, his partner (Gia Carides) refuses to dance … Continue reading
