Baby Name Lists: Helpful or Annoying?

Jacob, Mason, William, Sophia, Isabella, Emma… ring a bell? Are any of those your children’s names? If so, then consider yourself cool. And by cool, I mean uninspired. Okay, perhaps, that’s a bit harsh, but that’s how I see it. I’m the type to roll my eyes when popular baby name lists flood my email inbox. I am equally underwhelmed when I observe parents going gaga when they see their kid’s moniker featured on the Top 10. Whereas I realize that naming a newborn is among the most critical decisions in any parent’s life, I’m not convinced that moms and … Continue reading

More Bad News for Crazy Baby-Naming Parents

Remember the parents who named their children “Adolf Hitler” and “Aryan Nation”? Last year, the couple lost custody of their kids, and according to a new report, the children will likely remain separated from their parents for the foreseeable future. The kids’ dad, Heath Campbell, maintains that the reason the children were taken into the state’s custody is because a judge didn’t think they should remain with adults who would give them monikers with negative stereotypes. Meanwhile, court documents show that in 2010, officials found sufficient evidence of abuse or neglect existed because of domestic violence in the family’s New … Continue reading

The Key to a Happy Baby

Forget about a safe and loving home, extra-soft blankets, a warm bottle and doting parents, it seems the key to your baby’s happiness is all in his name. According to the moms behind the uber-popular baby naming website, Namberry.com, an optimistic, peppy moniker goes a long way to insure that your newborn will project a positive aura in a society that drips of doom and gloom. If you are about to bring an innocent child into this world filled with headlines featuring mass murderers, a dismal economy, international terrorism and cheating politicians, consider choosing a name which connotes happiness, hope … Continue reading

Baby Irene

There’s a baby boom on its way. If you believe the rumors that couples living along the East Coast got busy in bed while Hurricane Irene got busy making a mess of coastal communities, then not only will there be a baby boom next May, but also, the name Irene may be as trendy as Kyra and Emma. I chuckle when I hear about disaster-motivated sex; however, baby naming is an entirely different matter. Personally, I don’t know why parents choose to name their children after natural disasters. After all, why would you want your child’s name to be associated … Continue reading

Scary Trends in Baby Names

Leave it to Americans to find yet another way to immortalize pregnant teens. Just when you thought paying 16 year olds cold, hard cash to allow TV cameras to follow their every move as new parents was something to cringe about, now the government reveals that the young reality TV stars have some of the hottest names in the country. According to the Social Security Administration, the stars from MTV’s mega-popular show “Teen Mom,” are among the hottest trending names in the United States. Scary! I wish I were joking, but facts are facts. The Social Security Administration just released … Continue reading

Baby Names: Seasons of Change

One of my former colleagues gave birth to a baby girl in December. She named her Summer. Interestingly, her oldest daughter is named Autumn. She was born in March. She also has a son. His name is Ben. Go figure. I thought of Summer and Autumn after reading that actress Gretchen Mol just delivered her second child, a daughter, she named Winter. I don’t know many Winters. Then again, Mol’s 3-year-old son is named Ptolemy. Don’t know many people named Ptolemy either. According to baby name “experts,” seasonal names are “hot” right now. Still, I couldn’t find a single “expert” … Continue reading

Baby Names: Beyond Pink and Blue

When I was seven years old I swore that I would name my first daughter Sarah. No ifs, ands, or buts about it. I would give birth to a boy named John and a girl named Sarah. Of course, my future husband would happily agree to the chosen names because, you know… he loved me… and who wouldn’t want a son named John and a daughter named Sarah? Oh, and the huz would commute daily to his job on Wall Street from our home in Greenwich, Connecticut, while John, Sarah and I baked cookies from scratch. Ah, sweet, innocent seven. … Continue reading

Trendy Baby Names

“Today” show host Natalie Morales seemed a bit too enthusiastic to reveal the Top 100 Baby Names for 2010 this morning. Apparently, she was eager to see if her two sons’ names landed near the top of the list. Not quite. My daughter’s wasn’t up there either. So, which baby names are the hottest of the hot? I’ll give you a hint: think popular TV shows. “Glee”-inspired names such as Finn and Quinn are pretty hot, as is Betty from “Mad Men.” In addition, famous athletes turned celebrities also inspired some of the trendiest baby names of 2010, including Bode, … Continue reading

Baby vs. Pet Names

If you are a pet owner or know one, then you’re probably well aware that many consider themselves “parents” of their respective furballs, despite not sharing the same DNA. In addition to feeding, bathing and caring for their furry “kids,” pet parents also have the job of naming them. And if you have two-legged and four-legged kids, then playing the name game can get even trickier. Recently, there has been a heated debate in cyberworld between pet parents and the real deal over names. Names. Apparently, some people have the time and energy to get mad about others stealing the … Continue reading

Do All of Your Children’s Names Begin With the Same Letter?

The Duggar family didn’t start the same first letter name trend, but they’ve certainly perfected it like no other. For the past two decades, Michelle and Jim-Bob Duggar have paid homage to the 10th letter of the alphabet by giving each of their 18 children names that begin with J. There’s Joshua, John-David, Jana, Jill, Jessa, Jinger, Joseph, Josiah, Joy-Anna, Jeremiah, Jedidiah, Jason, James, Justin, Jackson, Johannah, Jennifer and 8-month-old Jordyn-Grace. Kind of puts the Carter, Cole and Cailin combo to shame. It’s not unusual for parents with more than one child to have their kids share the first letter … Continue reading
