Comic Relief Returns

If you have been missing Comic Relief, you will be glad to know it is returning! The three original comedian hosts – Billy Crystal, Whoopi Goldberg, and Robin Williams – will return on November 18th to resurrect their fundraising comedy concert. This is the first time in almost eight years the three have gotten together and this time, the money will go to victims of Hurricane Katrina, including both humans and the animals displaced because of the storm. Due to many factors including lack of housing and jobs, a year after the storm, the New Orleans population is estimated to … Continue reading

Nora Ephron Dead at 71

Did you ever use the phrase “I’ll have what she’s having?” I know I have and I haven’t even see all of the 1989 film When Harry Met Sally. But, I have certainly seen the famous scene over and over in clips through the years. Well, if you’ve ever used that phrase, you have Nora Ephron to thank for it. Ephron, an author, director, producer, filmmaker, novelist, and screenwriter, died this week from pneumonia brought on by acute myeloid leukemia. She was 71. Ephon because her career as a reporter for the New York Post, but also wrote for Esquire, … Continue reading

Sick Stars

He’s one of the funniest celebs on the planet, but Robin Williams’ current health condition is no laughing matter. The comedian needs heart surgery STAT. According to his rep, Williams’ needs an aortic valve replacement and will be forced to cancel the remainder of his one-man comedy show, “Weapons of Self-Destruction,” as a result. In a statement to fans released yesterday the “Dead Poet’s Society” star called his health scare a “minor setback” and promised that he would resume his act “after a little tune-up.” Williams was in Florida getting ready to perform in front of a live audience when … Continue reading

Star Updates: Billy Crystal Strikes Out and Melissa Joan Hart Strikes Again

When I last wrote about Billy Crystal he was about to suit up in Yankee pinstripes and sah-whing with the big boys against the Pittsburgh Pirates in an exhibition game. Well, sah-whing he did earlier today against Pittsburgh’s Paul Maholm. And as his equally famous buddy Robin Williams looked on Crystal’s bat actually came in contact with one of Maholm’s fastballs and bounced past first baseman Adam LaRoche into foul territory. So much for a second career. Crystal may have struck out, but the funny man who wore No. 60 on the day before his 60th birthday still got a … Continue reading

Murder on the Atlantic — Steve Allen

Call me a dope (no, please don’t; it’s been a bad self-esteem day as it is) but I didn’t know that Steve Allen wrote books. I remember him from television years ago as being a comedian and musician, married to Jayne Meadows, but I didn’t know that he had ventured into the world of Authorship. When I stumbled across this book on the library bookshelf I was surprised, and after having read it, I can say it was a pleasant surprise. Steve is a very funny man, and he’s a good writer. What intrigued me the most about his style … Continue reading

Putting the Fun Back into FUNdraising

It’s fall, school is back in and it’s time to start the fundraising efforts that PTA’s launch every year in an effort to raise funds for the school. When I was a kid, I didn’t pay much attention to the fundraising efforts beyond what prizes could be won. My daughter was thinking in a somewhat similar vein when she brought home her fund raising package on Friday. But I thought about it over the weekend and last night, she and I sat down to discuss the FUNdraising that needed to be done and why it needed to be. I asked … Continue reading
