Christmas Morning Part II

While I was cooking and baking Christmas breakfast, our son was insistent that we help him find a pair of his “toy” drum sticks.  I insisted that he should check under the tree and see if Santa left a long and narrow gift.  I told him that if Santa was going to go through all the trouble of getting him a drum, that it would be pretty silly of Santa to not bring him some drum sticks too.  Our son searched under the tree but thought that every gift was long and narrow!  After I pointed him to the right … Continue reading

Choosing a Christmas Tree

Choosing a Christmas tree sounds like a simple exercise, but sometimes it is not. First there is the decision about whether to have an artificial tree or a real tree. For me there is no contest. The real tree wins hands down. Yes, I know they drop pine needles and you have to get rid of the dead tree at the end of the Christmas period, but it is worth it for that smell of Christmas that comes in with the pine. Since we are in summer in Australia there’s no point buying a tree too early, even though the … Continue reading

Picking Out Your Baby’s Christmas Outfit

With Christmas a little more than a week away, you might be planning how to dress your baby for his or her big Christmas debut. If this is your baby’s first Christmas, her wardrobe is a big deal. Will she wear a “Baby’s First Christmas” shirt, a dress, or a Santa suit? She’s going to be in a lot of photos, so choose wisely. My philosophy on special outfits is “keep it simple.” Sometimes, something understated and elegant will actually have the biggest impact. I love to see layered and accessorized outfits featuring a blend of neutrals and a touch … Continue reading

Countdown to the Holidays: Donation Day

How are you preparing for the holidays? During the last post I talked about getting the house back into somewhat normal order after a couple of weeks of heavy workloads and church commitments. Well, I am happy to report that we are mostly there. My next order of business in my home is to eliminate the clutter and the excess. This will not only make it easier to keep everything clean, but it will leave room for the holiday decorating. The decorations will have a place to go, especially the Christmas tree, and the house won’t look overwhelmed. It will … Continue reading

Creating a Christmas Layout

It is the season of giving and making memories. We want to preserve our Christmas memories with photos in our scrapbooks. What is the best layout for our Christmas photos? Here are some ideas: A scrapbook is a way in which we can be creative and record memories on paper with photos, sentiments and embellishments. That said, take a look at Christmas decorations. I’m going to use the decorating theme I used in my home as the theme for my Christmas layout in my scrapbook. I used reindeer as the theme for my decorating. I have a collection of reindeer … Continue reading

Chris Brown is Going Down

He may have been able to sweet talk his way back into Rihanna’s life, but things are far from rosy for singer Chris Brown. According to reports, Brown will be in court this afternoon facing charges of felony assault and making a criminal threat, in connection with his arrest last month involving a badly beaten Rihanna. If Brown is convicted of the criminal threats charge he could face up to nine years in prison. Today’s court hearing will also shed light on new details that are emerging about the alleged attack that left the 21-year-old award-winning female recording star with … Continue reading

Recipe for a Christmas Classic

When you think of classic Christmas dinners what comes to mind? Some families celebrate the occasion with a traditional Christmas turkey or ham, while others opt for prime rib. Christmas at my house always included my grandfather’s favorite Beef Wellington. If you are hosting a house full of people on Christmas and have the means to afford this elaborate dish, I highly recommend going all out for your guests. After all, Christmas comes just once a year. TRADITIONAL BEEF WELLINGTON Ingredients: 2 (8-ounce) steaks Salt and pepper 2 tablespoons olive oil (divided) 3/4 pound mushrooms, minced 1 shallot, minced 2 … Continue reading

Paddington Bear and the Christmas Surprise – Michael Bond

It’s Christmas time, and Paddington wants to do something special. He suggests to the Brown family that they head down to the department store to see Santa. There will be a sleigh ride and a visit to Santa’s workshop, as well. Paddington is especially curious to see where Santa makes his marmalade. (I didn’t know Santa made marmalade, but who am I to argue with Paddington Bear?) The Browns are clueless about the marmalade too, which makes me feel better. They headed off to the store and Paddington made a beeline to Santa. There were two huge sacks of toys, … Continue reading

How Brown Mouse Kept Christmas – Clyde Watson

It’s Christmas Eve, and everyone is running around getting ready for Christmas, hanging up their stockings and putting up the last minute decorations. They sang carols and then all the children went to bed. They could hear the grown-ups moving around downstairs, but soon the whole house was quiet and everyone was fast asleep. Meanwhile, in the attic, the mice were excited about Christmas. Christmas means crumbs! They had spent the day letting the cat chase them so he’d be too tired to chase them tonight when they crept downstairs to see what they could get into. Brown Mouse was … Continue reading

Going Gourmet

A couple of weeks ago, we were in one of those fancy chain gourmet stores looking at some dinnerware. Our current set is a hand-me-down set that is missing many pieces. The pieces are missing mostly thanks to Mrs Butterfingers over here…me. While I was pregnant, my joints would loosen up so much that my husband swears he could hear my bones rattle around as I walked. An average rate of one broken plate/bowl/cup a month times three pregnancies..well, you get the picture. While we were in that gourmet store, we spied a very pretty canister of gourmet chocolate waffle … Continue reading
