Celebrities and Hurricane Gustav

While the major networks were watching Hurricane Gustav unleash its fury on Louisiana entertainment publications were keeping a close eye on celebrities watching what New Orleans mayor described as “the mother of all storms.” (Today Mayor Ray Nagin amended his description calling Gustav “the mother-in-law or the ugly sister of all storms.”) Which just goes to show that the media can spin practically any current events story into one that involves Hollywood’s biggest names. Yesterday I saw video of men working to board up Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt’s New Orleans home. The couple, which bought a home and lived … Continue reading

Celebrity Moms Lending a Hand to Children of the World

Dogs living around a Staten Island, New York elementary school for autistic children must have gotten an earful yesterday when Jennifer Lopez made a surprise visit to perform for some unsuspecting students. Imagine the ear piercing screams that came from the auditorium where a group of 10- and 11-year-olds and their family members were gathered for a graduation ceremony. The happy day was made even more exciting when the singer and new mom to twins performed her hit “Let’s Get Loud” for the students at their commencement ceremony. A teacher at the school told local newspapers that she showed the … Continue reading

Brad and Barack Cousins

Just call them the family ties that bind… and gag. It’s the headline that has tongues wagging across political lines. According to a renowned genealogical organization, actor Brad Pitt and presidential candidate Barack Obama are related. And that’s not all, researchers at the New England Historic Genealogical Society say they can also prove that Pitt’s partner Angelina Jolie is a distant cousin of Obama’s fellow presidential hopeful Hilary Clinton. According to genealogy experts, Pitt and Jolie are both ninth cousins of the candidates. But Clinton’s famous ties don’t stop there. Researchers say the former first lady is also related to … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potpourri: Angelina Jolie’s Newest Fans and Billy Joel’s Anti-War Song

Angelina Jolie may not know that some of her most fervent fans live in the Philippines. And they aren’t women who idolize the international film star or men who dream of wooing her away from Brad Pitt, these fans live in rice paddies… and they are asking the 32-year-old actress to lend them a helping hand. A left-wing Filipino farmers group trying to call attention to thousands of rural people who have been displaced by increased military operations wants Jolie to adopt their cause. The Farmers’ Movement of the Philippines, or KMP, wants the United Nations to send Jolie – … Continue reading

Musicians Getting and Giving Aid

GETTING AID At 26 years old you’d think singer Isaac Hanson would be in the prime of his life. However, the guitarist for the all-brother group Hanson recently came close to losing it all during a concert in Dallas. That’s when he says his shoulder started swelling and his right arm became numb. “Having had this happen before, I started to be really suspicious of what it was,” Hanson told reporters. “In the middle of the show, I said to someone: ‘We may need to go to the hospital.’ ” Hanson was able to make it through the show, but … Continue reading

Generous Celebs Keep the Giving Going

There’s nothing like tax time to get you to review just how generous you’ve been in the last 12 months. And it’s not just you—–many Hollywood celebrities are taking time to total up their good (financial) deeds and some have been quite a bit more generous than others. Take for example, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. The handsome Tinseltown duo is known for helping those in need with their time and talent, but did you know that according to federal tax filings, the pair routinely digs deep (really deep) into their wallets to aid the less fortunate as well? According … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates: Mysteries Solved

Granted, I don’t know all the details of Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt’s divorce, but I can’t help but wonder what the actress thinks about the current state of her ex-husband’s life. After all, no matter how hard she may try to concentrate on her own life there is no escaping the inordinate amount of press coverage Pitt and current flame Angelina Jolie constantly generate between their growing brood and charitable work—news of the couple makes headlines on a daily basis. But I digress. The topic of this blog is celebrity mysteries and one of them has evidently been solved … Continue reading

The Concert That Keeps Giving

If you find yourself near the Atlanta area this week—consider yourself lucky. That’s where you will find what is being billed as the “World’s Largest Open Mic Night.” Only instead of one night, the concert will last 10 straight nights. Ten nights of music featuring 500 bands and solo artists performing hits from a variety of genres–rock, R&B, rap, and bluegrass–but, with a couple of twists. First, the tunes will be performed, in order, each of the 500 greatest songs of all time, as ranked by Rolling Stone magazine three years ago. The other twist: the songfest’s goal is to … Continue reading

Musicians To The Rescue

It’s considered one of the country’s premier musical events, but many of the hottest acts performing at this year’s New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival weren’t wielding microphones and trumpets; rather they were grabbing paintbrushes and swinging hammers in a part of the city still recovering from Hurricane Katrina. Last night on the news I watched one of my girlhood crushes, Harry Connick Jr., trimming a bedroom window with fresh paint. Meanwhile, another shot showed R&B heartthrob John Legend washing clothes as part of a free mobile laundry service for families still living in federally issued trailers in hard-hit St. … Continue reading
