That's who won the chance to play an extra in Will Ferrell's new movie. Confused? In a previous blog I told you about Ferrell's idea to auction off a role in his new flick in order to raise money for the Cancer for College foundation run by his former fraternity brother at the University of Southern California. The opening bid was $5,000 and Ferrell made the comment that getting $10,000 would be a wonderful achievement. Well, consider Ferrell officially blown away. The winning bid came in at $47,100 from a Dallas man who says he intends to give the part to his 10-year-old son. "Winning this auction means a lot to me on a very personal basis," the winner said in a statement released to the media. "I lost my mother to ovarian cancer a few years ago, so I feel fortunate that my 10-year-old and I are able to participate in an event involving Cancer for College and Will Ferrell." Meanwhile, Ferrell told reporters he was stunned that the non-speaking part in his new movie, "Step Brothers" was able to garner so much money. "We are overwhelmed with the response and generosity to the auction," Ferrell said. "This money will help so many young people with their dreams of attending college." The boy and his dad will meet Ferrell tomorrow at the 14th annual Cancer for College golf tournament dinner, then join the actor on the movie set next month. Not a bad way to make parent of the year... Meanwhile, Katie Couric may be in last place in the evening news ratings race, but her daughters say she will always be a winner in their book... even though they too don't usually tune in to watch their mom on TV. The CBS Evening News anchor recently admitted to a room full of people at Washington, D.C.'s National Press Club that she can't even count on her own two daughters to watch her daily broadcasts. "They watch The O.C.," Couric told the crowd. "They're very excited about Gossip Girl. I don't think they pay a lot of attention to the news right now. They're 16 and 11." The 50-year-old former "Today" show host continues to make headlines... and stabs... at why her news broadcast is losing the ratings race. One theory Couric holds strong to is the suggestion that the countless "frivolous" segments she did on the "Today" show gave people the impression that she wasn't a serious person. So when she went from dressing up as Sponge Bob SquarePants for Halloween on NBC to sitting in the same seat as Walter Cronkite on CBS people had a hard time making the adjustment.
