Green Celebrities: Bob Barker

Bob Barker left “The Price is Right” in 2007, but as a game show host, he remains a television icon. If you ever watching him on the show, you may remember that at the end of almost every episode, he reminded us to “Help control the pet population. Have your pets spayed or neutered.” (This work is in the public domain in that it was published in the United States between 1923 and 1977 and without a copyright notice. Unless its author has been dead for several years, it is copyrighted in jurisdictions that do not apply the rule of … Continue reading

Green Celebrities: Robert Redford

Robert Redford began his acting career in 1960 and has become a highly acclaimed actor, producer, and director, but there is another side to him. He has also been a long time conservationist and environmentalist. It is believed that his love of nature came when he took a trip to Yosemite National Park at age 11 after fending off a mild case of polio. Redford purchased land near Wasatch Mountain in Utah and named it Sundance Village. The community is dedicated to environmental conservation and each year, hosts the famed Sundance Film Festival, which often features green documentaries and hosts … Continue reading

A Secret Wedding and A Secret Engagement

They finally did it. After more than four years together actor Tobey Maguire and Jennifer Meyer got married in a secret sunset ceremony on the Big Island of Hawaii Monday. According to Maguire’s rep, the nuptials were witnessed by a very small group of family members (including the couple’s 9-month-old daughter) and a few close friends. The 32-year-old “Spider-Man” star and 30-year-old Meyer (the daughter of Hollywood big wig Ron Meyer, president and chief operating officer of Universal Studios) have been dating since 2003 and were engaged last year shortly after Meyer learned she was pregnant. Their daughter Ruby was … Continue reading

Celebrities, The Environment, and Human Rights

Celebrities and their pet charities are a popular topic in this blog. Libby and I have written about stars lending a hand to the homeless, the innocent, and the sick. But, this week the spotlight focused on a growing concern among politicians, actors, and musicians—the environment. Actress Cameron Diaz, hip-hop producer Pharrell, and former vice president Al Gore joined forces to announce an international campaign to promote global warming awareness. The monster event to be held this summer is called Save Our Selves – The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis. It features a 24-hour “Live Earth” concert, which will … Continue reading

Green Musicians – Sting – Part 1

I’ve done a series on Green Celebrities, mostly concentrating on actors who have been very active in promoting environmental and social issues. But, I haven’t included musicians in that group. Today, I am going to talk about a musician who has served as a tireless activist since the early ‘80s – Sting. As far back as 1980, Sting was socially active. His musical career hadn’t reached its peak yet, but he was singing about world hunger in “Driven to Tears” from the 1980 album Zenyattà Mondatta. Sting performed “Roxanne” and “Message in a Bottle” at 1981’s The Secret Policeman’s Other … Continue reading

Nicole Kidman Gives Birth to a Day of the Week

Maybe she was delirious from the pain of giving birth. Or perhaps she was just deliriously happy. There’s no real way to know (at least for now) if Nicole Kidman actually thought she gave birth on Sunday or if she simply likes the way the word rolls off her tongue. Regardless, her new daughter now shares her name with the first day of the week. Sunday Rose Kidman Urban was officially welcomed into the world Monday morning by her proud parents—-Kidman and country music superstar Keith Urban. According to reports, baby Sunday weighed in at 6 lbs., 7.5 oz. and … Continue reading

Nicole’s Post Baby Project

While her ex-husband is trying to keep his feet off Oprah’s couch Nicole Kidman is maintaining her footing with movie studios. The Oscar winner is not due to give birth for another two months, but reports say she has already signed on to star in her first major movie role post baby. According to Variety, Kidman is set to play legendary singer Dusty Springfield in a film chronicling her life. But not only has the Australian beauty agreed to star in the movie, but reports say she will produce it as well. Kidman’s return to the big screen will reunite … Continue reading

George Clooney’s New Gig

From Darfur to Switzerland? It appears hunky George Clooney is spreading his knowledge of all things environmentally and socially sound to a more neutral country. According Clooney’s rep, the handsome and still bruised actor has accepted the job of executive board member of a new Swiss energy company that will “develop environmentally friendly techniques for car motors and other devices.” The new company is being created by a Swiss billionaire who is interested in pursuing new advancements in the clean production of hydrogen, solar energy and fuel cells. Nicolas Hayek, chairman of the Swatch Group (the largest watchmaker in the … Continue reading

Music News: It’s All About The Digits

Do you remember Tommy Tutone’s 1982 hit single that made the phone number 867-5309 famous? The song used the digits over and over in its catchy refrain and skyrocketed to the top of the pop music charts. Well, now the song is the subject of a bitter battle between two businesses. According to news reports, a Rhode Island company and a national firm are battling over the right to use the number. The fight reportedly began two years ago, when Gem Plumbing & Heating of Lincoln, Rhode Island trademarked the popular phone number after Tutone’s song reached No. 4 on … Continue reading

Bob Geldolf vs. Al Gore

In this corner: Bob Geldolf, former front-man of The Boomtown Rats and the man who organized the Live Aid and Live 8 benefit concerts. And in this corner: former vice-president and resident greenie Al Gore. Both ready to do battle. Ding. Ding. Gore probably outweighs Geldolf by the equivalent of a dozen Sanjaya Malakars, but Geldolf is the one who has been getting in the most jabs. Most recently Geldolf has come out swinging at the politician-turned environmental activist, criticizing the Live Earth music events Gore is putting together this summer, saying they lack a specific goal. In a previous … Continue reading
