Diabetes on the Rise in Pets

Obesity is on the rise in pets — just like in people. And just like in people, diabetes is rising in dogs and cats. Diabetes affects as many as one out of every fifty pets, and overweight pets are at higher risk. What is diabetes? When the body doesn’t produce enough insulin, the body can’t process or properly use glucose (blood sugar). The glucose isn’t going into the body’s tissues, and instead builds up in blood and urine. If your pet is overweight, watch for these signs that may indicate diabetes: You may notice your pet drinking a lot of … Continue reading

Dr. Diabetes

When I was a kid my favorite comic book characters were Archie, Betty, Veronica and Jughead. That was decades ago. These days kids are not only the ones reading comic books, but many of them are creating their own series and generating quite a following in the process. Once comic book series in particular has been making headlines around the world recently, not so much because of its subject matter, but because of who is responsible for crafting the books. Thirteen-year-old Kamaal Washington battles diabetes every day. In his comic book, “Dr. Diabetes,” a sinister character that is determined to … Continue reading

Celebrities Putting A Famous Face On Diabetes

November is American Diabetes Month. For those of you unfamiliar with the disease, diabetes is a serious condition that affects the body’s ability to produce or respond properly to insulin, a hormone that allows blood glucose (sugar) to enter the cells of the body and be used for energy. According to the American Diabetes Association, nearly 21 million children and adults in the U.S. have the disease. It is the fifth deadliest disease in the U.S. and it has no cure. Families.com has an incredible diabetes advocate in our own blogger, Kristyn Crow. You can read her many excellent blogs … Continue reading

Recent Celebrity Splits

I learned of two celebrity splits today – well, one celebrity split and one pseudo-celebrity split. The pseudo-celebrity split was a reality couple – “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” couple Adrienne Maloof and Paul Nassif has called it quits. It was actually Nassif that filed for legal separation today. He told TMZ, “The welfare of our children is my primary focus as Adrienne and I work through this difficult time.” He added, “I want the best for her and our children and I hope that everyone can respect our privacy away from the cameras.” The couple has three sons … Continue reading

Rocker Bret Michaels in Critical Condition

If you have watched any of his reality shows (“Rock of Love” and “Celebrity Apprentice”), you are probably aware that rocker Bret Michaels is a Type 1 diabetic. Having had several friends that were Type 1 diabetics, I know that this disease can really do a lot of damage to your health. In one of the last episode of “Celebrity Apprentice,” Michaels was upset because the doctors feared his young daughter was a diabetic as well and he knew how tough it would be if she was. And while Michaels has appeared healthy on this season’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” his health … Continue reading

The Joaquin Phoenix Circus Continues while Bret Michaels Opens Up

Joaquin Phoenix is in the news again and as you might suspect, it is not in a good way. The actor turned rapper has puzzled everyone with his new bizarre personality and looks, but no one really seems to know if it is all an act or just a frightening public breakdown a la Britney. Phoenix was performing at the Fountainbleau’s LIV nightclub in Miami Wednesday night when he experienced a heckler (and if you’ve hear his “music,” that is completely understandable!). It was around 2 a.m. when Phoenix, who had exchanged barbs with the heckler, decided to take matters … Continue reading

B.B. King Gains a Museum while Elvis Loses One

Legendary bluesman B.B. King has gotten his own museum in Indianola, Mississippi, his home town. You may not have heard of Indianola, it is a tiny town of just over 12,000. But they rolled out the carpet for their favorite son with a $15 million dollar B.B. King and Delta Interpretative Center. B.B. said that he hopes the museum will be used to education the young and old about the origins of the blues. The 20,000 square foot museum is a mixture of the new (with touch screen interactivity) and the old (vinyl records and yellowed, faded recording contracts from … Continue reading

No More Excuses…A Type 1 Diabetic Climbs Mount Everest!

Since I have two sons with juvenile diabetes, I often hear “I’m a diabetic,” excuses. “Mom, I have to eat this cupcake right NOW. My bloodsugar is low.” “Mom, can’t you excuse me from the 1.5 mile run at school, since I’m a diabetic?” Well, now I’m armed with proof positive that diabetics can do anything. And I mean anything. Will Cross doesn’t let chronic illness get in the way of achieving his dreams. Thirty years ago he was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes (type I) at the age of nine. Now, a 39-year-old father of six, he became the first … Continue reading
