California Wildfires Putting the Heat on Tourist Hot Spots

If you’ve watched even a few minutes of the news in the last week then you seen that parts of California have been reduced to a charred smoky mess. It’s an image tourism officials in Southern California don’t want you to see. As firefighters scramble to extinguish the remaining wildfires, members of San Diego’s Convention and Visitors Bureau are scurrying to do damage control of their own. One official with the group recently told news reporters: “The fires have been a horrible situation, but (the impact on the city) also has been a little overblown. You would think that every … Continue reading

Britney’s Home Away From Home In Fire’s Path

I’m not referring to the pop star’s sprawling beachfront Malibu pad that she shares with her two sons (when she’s allowed to see them). I’m talking about Brit’s rehab digs–Malibu Promises. The rehabilitation center to the stars (other unsuccessful alum include Lindsay Lohan) was forced to move staff members and about 20 patients as flames from the massive Southern California wildfires crept closer to the facility. Promises CEO told news reporters staff members evacuated everyone from the premises after the power went out and they could see flames coming over the mountain. Patients were reportedly relocated to an “upscale hotel” … Continue reading

Air Travel and the California Wildfires—What You Need To Know

If you have a flight scheduled to arrive or depart from any airport in Southern California this week you are in line to catch a break. Today, a number of major airlines announced they are waiving fees for passengers looking to reschedule flights in or out of the area’s airports because of the raging wildfires that have scorched thousands of acres, destroyed more than 1300 homes and claimed at least one life. Typically, travelers wanting to change flights are subject to fees that exceed $100 in some cases. But, most major carriers said they would be waiving those fees to … Continue reading

More Celebrities Fleeing Fire Zone

The ferocious fires ripping their way through Southern California has prompted another wave of celebrity evacuations. In my previous blogs I told you that stars such as Sean Penn and Suzanne Somers were just a few of the Malibu residents forced to flee their million-dollar mansions since Sunday. Now it seems half of Hollywood is following in their lead. Tori Spelling and her husband Dean McDermott’s newly renovated bed and breakfast, Chateau La Rue, in Fallbrook, California, about 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles was evacuated yesterday. The B&B is the setting for the couple’s reality TV show, Tori & … Continue reading

Celebrity Fire Watch—–Update

If you are Suzanne Somers’ neighbors you have to be wondering if she is a lightning rod of sorts. Can lightning really strike the same place twice? The actress and her family have been forced to evacuate their temporary residence in Malibu as a ferocious wildfire closes in. Sadly, the former “Three’s Company” star knows the drill all to well. You’ll recall Somers lost her beachfront home in another Malibu fire earlier this year. The actress moved into temporary digs nearby and news reports are now confirming that the massive blaze that has already charred thousands of acres is threatening … Continue reading

Celebrities On Fire Watch

Olivia Newton-John and “Titanic” director James Cameron may soon be sifting through charred remains of their homes if fierce Santa Ana winds don’t shift or die down. The celebrities are just a handful of Malibu residents whose palatial mansions are in the path of a raging wildfire. Hundreds in the area have been forced to evacuate their properties, including the family of country music superstar Tanya Tucker. Other celebs whose Malibu mansions are in danger include Jennifer Aniston, Nick Nolte, Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson, Howie Mandel, Jeff Bridges, David Arquette and Courteney Cox, Linda Ronstandt, Goldie Hawn, Mel Gibson, … Continue reading

The NFL Goes to the Disney Institute

It’s not been a good year for the National Football League. I don’t follow the sport at all, but even I know they faced a players’ strike just before the 2011 season was supposed to launch, and that anything to do with the Super Bowl, besides the football itself, has been under fire recently. Who do you call when you want to revamp your image and better organize events for giant crowds? Disney, apparently. USA Today reports that the NFL has signed up for some training with the Disney Institute. If you don’t remember, the Disney Institute is part of … Continue reading

Learning Unit – Japan and Natural Disasters

We have all watched the news reports from Japan with horror and sadness. Some of us have children old enough to understand the ramifications, and some of us have children too young to comprehend. I suggest using this monumental event in our world’s history as a study unit in our homeschools. Geography –pull out maps or our globe and discuss where Japan is, what its major cities are, and learn what other countries surround it. Social Studies – learn about the culture of Japan and what makes it such a strong, proud country. Learn to make some traditional Japanese dishes … Continue reading

Charlie Sheen’s Not the Only One to Lose His Mind – Part 2

So if you read my last blog, you know Charlie Sheen’s gone of the deep end. It can’t get any worse than his nonsensical rants, right? Wrong. It’s been a week where even Christina Aguilera’s being arrested for public intoxication hardly made the news, so who else seems to have lost it? Dior’s star designer John Galliano. The other night when I was watching the Oscar after party, the press was interviewing Natalie Portman. One reporter asked why, as the new face of Dior, she wasn’t wearing a Dior dress. Then, the reporter asked what Natalie thought about some anti-Semitic … Continue reading

Bye-Bye Bachelorette

Any bets on how long this union will last? No takers here. I actually thought that Jen Schefft would make it last with The Bachelor Andrew Firestone. Boy, was I wrong. Those two broke up, and then Schefft took her pity party to The Bachelorette and struck out there too. Now, it appears as though the 32-year-old blonde is finally looking to make it work. Last night the former reality TV star married fellow Chicagoan Joe Waterman in what some described as a “traditional yet modern” Windy City ceremony. Translation: They got hitched in a popular Italian restaurant near the … Continue reading
