On the Set Hookups

You’ve all heard it before – some actress met some actor on the set and they hooked up. It happened to Liz and Richard, Brad and Angelina, and even Jennifer and her new guy, Justin Theroux. Who else has hooked up while on the set? Well, onset hookups go back quite a ways in the annals of Hollywood history. And often, like in two of the three cases above, it involves cheating on a spouse. Clark Gable and Loretta Young got closer-than-this on the set of The Call of the Wild in 1935. Their onset dalliance resulted in Young getting … Continue reading

Love That Lasts

Sometimes you just see love in the faces and actions of other married couples. Yesterday was such a day for me. Our choir went to sing for the elderly residents in a local nursing home. I looked out a saw one couple. She was nestled close to him and they were holding hands as they listened to us sing. As we sang The Anniversary Waltz she started to quietly sing along, all the time looking at her husband. You got the feeling it didn’t matter a bit that she was old and wrinkled and that he was old and wrinkled. … Continue reading

Movie Misquotes – Part 1

I love movie quotes. I must drive my husband nuts because I am constantly quoting my favorite movies around the house. But, there are some instances where I misquote. Oh, I get the general idea of the quote and I’d swear I was right, until I see the actual movie and hear the character say the line. However, I am not the only one. The other day, I came across some of the most commonly misquoted movie lines. See if you fall for any of these: “Play it again, Sam.” Even those that haven’t seen Casablanca know this quote. But, … Continue reading

52 Romantic Movies You Either Love or Hate

Dale’s blogs about some of her favorite romantic movies (see “Favorite Romance Movies” and “Favorite Romance Movies-Part 2”) has inspired this next one from me. The idea took hold because I sympathized with a comment one reader, deedee1231, left on both blogs regarding the movie Casablanca. She wasn’t a fan. (Though she didn’t begrudge Dale for including it on her fave list.) Deedee1231 thought Casablanca was overhyped. (Though she also admitted she’d seen it so many times she was just plum over it.) I chuckled with sympathy when I read her comment. Though it wasn’t Casablanca I had in mind, … Continue reading

Favorite Romance Movies- Part 2

Following on from my last post of favorite romantic movies here are the rest. The Illusionist -This is without doubt a love story of a couple separated by class, upbringing, distance and various other problems. But they risk all to find a way to be together. The sex scene in this movie is artistically handled. This is one of Mick’s and my favorite films. Can you guess that we both like films where love triumphs over the odds? It’s a bit like our own romance but that’s another story. Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner- I’ve always been a big fan … Continue reading

Thank you for joining us for our third and final installment of our interview with award-winning author Janet Kay Jensen, who has brought us “The Booklover’s Cookbook” and “Don’t You Marry the Mormon Boys.” If you missed days one and two, you can click the links to get caught up. I love going to the theater – almost anything on the stage is intriguing. My husband and I love Broadway musicals, plays, ballet and other forms of … Continue reading

The Inn of the Sixth Happiness (1958)

Ingrid Bergman stars as Gladys Aylworth in this deeply touching film about a woman who wants to make a difference in the world. Always shy and submissive, she breaks out of her mold and decides to go to China anyway. This Year’s Academy Awards

This Sunday is the 79th Annual Academy Awards. This year’s host will be Ellen Degeneres. I like Ellen – I think she is funny. I never cared to watch her talk show because I like her more as a stand up comedian, but I think she should fit in well as host. This is her first appearance as an Oscar host. As I started searching Families.com, I realized we had tons of blogs on Oscar’s previous hosts, previous winners, and this year’s nominees. Check some of these out: Blogs about former Oscar hosts: Chris Rock Chris Rock: Brooklyn’s Own Stand-Up … Continue reading

Indiscreet (1958)

In “Indiscreet,” Anna Kalman (Ingrid Bergman) is an actress who has earned a name for herself on the stage. Her career has kept her from meeting the man of her dreams, and she’s nearly given up hope that she’ll ever marry. But then she meets a co-worker of her brother-in-law’s, and her mind is changed. Phillip Adams (Cary Grant) is everything she has ever dreamed of, and more. He’s dashing, handsome, considerate, charming . . . . well, he’s Cary Grant. You can see why she’d be swept off her feet. There’s just one problem – he’s married. But he’s … Continue reading
