Britney Spears Files For Divorce

They said it wouldn't last... and I guess they were right. According to various news sources, pop star Britney Spears has filed for divorce from her husband of two years, Kevin Federline.

The news was confirmed by a Los Angeles Superior Court spokesperson Pat Kelly who told reporters: "Yes, it's confirmed. It was filed today, on the grounds of irreconcilable differences."

According to court documents, Spears gives a separation date of Monday and asks that each party pay their own legal fees and waives her right to spousal support. She also requests that certain assets, including "miscellaneous jewelry and other personal effects," be confirmed as separate property.

Sigh... where do I begin my analysis on this situation? First and foremost, regardless of how much you may despise their parents, your heart has to go out to Spears and Federline's two very young sons, one-year-old Sean Preston and 5-week-old son, Jayden James. As adults those two kids will likely never remember a time that their parents lived under the same roof together or in all likelihood ever remember a time when they weren't shuttled between two parents and two homes.

The divorce announcement comes on the heels of Spears brief appearance on last night's "The Late Show with David Letterman." Her 30-second chat with Letterman never hinted of a split, but critics of the Spears and Federline pairing didn't let that stop them from predicting an end was in sight.

It may have been because both Spears and Federline spent the weekend in New York City, yet the pop princess did not appear at any of the events promoting her husband's new CD, "Playing with Fire." Still, on Friday night at his record release party at the Manhattan hot spot Stereo, Federline shot down rumors of strife in his marriage, telling PEOPLE magazine, "I don't waste any energy thinking about these things. I don't get caught up in it."

However, the magazine reports that days earlier Federline told a staff reporter because of his touring schedule, "I'm not going to see my family as much as I want to, but I mean, those are the sacrifices you make as an artist."

So much has been made of this union... so many interviews, so many magazine covers, so many lines in gossip columns, so many blogs--I just wonder if today's announcement will put an end to the media circus surrounding them? What do you think?

It had to happen, there was no way that pair were stable enough in themselves to be either partners or parents. Great article, Michele! Thanks for keeping us up to date on the whole Federline fiasco!

I honestly never saw what she saw in him to begin with. But, I guess the "sperm donor" has complete his job - once again! LOL!

But, I doubt the Britney media circus will end with Kevin's exit. Like Paris Hilton, she is more famous now for being famous than anything else.

I feel very SAD for Britney I am sure she had all the same hope for her marriage that most of us have.

The attention and stress someone with her fame has must be horrible.

But, as my husband said, he thinks this happens when celebrity women marry less famous people...seems to be true when you look at the past very famous females.

I just hope she can be a good mother for her two-little boys.

Beth, Libby and Anna--thanks for your comments!! You are all dead on with your remarks, and Anna I totally agree with your first line. The entire ordeal is rather sad.
