Homeless Doll Causes Controversy

Would you buy your little girl a homeless doll… for $95? If you answered “no,” did you do so because you didn’t think your daughter would be interested in playing with a doll whose family has been hit by the financial crises and must sleep in their car, or are you more offended that a doll manufacturer would require that you drop nearly $100 for the privilege of schooling your kid in Homelessness 101? Dropping $100 (not including hair accessories) on a doll? Heck, at that price we’ll all end up sleeping in our cars, and then our daughters can … Continue reading

The Cost of Breastfeeding Intervention vs. Formula Feeding

I have written before about my beloved Meghan, who was the absolute worse nursing baby in the whole world. She was cranky, didn’t latch properly, made breastfeeding a nightmare. . .and so on. She was my third baby though, so I was willing to seek out qualified professional help. . .at the hefty price of $135 per hour! Our insurance company does not cover a visit to the lactation consultant. I am not aware of any in this area that do nor am I aware of any pediatric practices that have them on staff. (Some pediatric practices near us have … Continue reading

Breastfeeding At 35,000 Feet = High-Flying Controversy

I’ve breastfed my child on numerous flights—have you? One woman did recently and claims she was kicked off her flight as a result. Now the mom from New Mexico has secured an attorney and has filed complaints against two airlines. According to news reports, Emily Gillette, a 27-year-old mother from Santa Fe, New Meixco, filed the complaint with the Vermont Human Rights Commission late last week against Delta Air Lines and Freedom Airlines. Freedom was operating the Delta flight Gillette was flying between Burlington and New York City. According to the complaint, last month, Gillette was discreetly breastfeeding her 22-month-old … Continue reading

Breastfeeding Mom vs. Toys R Us

Here’s one for all you breastfeeding moms out there (and you moms who have successfully weaned your children from the breast): Nearly a week after a Brooklyn mother alleged that she was harassed by employees at a New York City Toys R Us, when she breast fed her infant son, proponents of breast milk are planning a “nurse-in” outside the flagship Times Square store. According to the Daily News, Chelsi Meyerson, contends she was ordered to go to the store’s basement after a female employee caught her breastfeeding her 7-month-old son during a family trip to the store last Monday. … Continue reading

That Twin Thing: Social Development

Twins are the fascinating subject of numerous studies. There are studies that attempt to lay to rest the great nature vs. nurture debate. There are studies to support or debunk the idea that twins, especially identical twins have some sort of mysterious connection unknown to the non-multiple world. There are studies that attempt to explain how they develop and how being a twin (or multiple) affects life. And for all the studies that have been done, there are just as many conclusions. However, one aspect that I’ve noticed to be very different in their development is their social development. In … Continue reading

Is Your Baby Bottle Safe–UPDATE

A while ago, I had written a blog about the plastic being used in most brands of baby bottles. You can read the full blog here, but the summary is that the most popular brands of baby bottles are being made with bisphenol A (BPA) in the plastic. A study was done and researchers found that an unsafe amount of BPA leaked into the contents of the bottle after several uses. Now I have some good news! Whole Foods now sells Born Free baby bottles, a brand that is deemed “safer” because it is biphenyl A Free. You may thought … Continue reading

Why You Won’t Catch Me at a Nurse-In

Maybe I’m just not a good lactivist. I have the golden opportunity to participate in a “nurse-in” downtown in Times Square and I’m not going. It’s not because I’m too busy or don’t have the time. It doesn’t even have to do with the fact that I’m nursing twins and doing so outside of the Toys R Us in Times Square would be a nightmare. Rather, I’m actively participating in my own “nurse out”. I know, if you follow my blogs some of you are probably shocked. I actively promote breastfeeding every chance I get because I believe it’s that … Continue reading
