Green Musicians – Bob Geldof

Back in the early 80’s, I knew of Bob Geldof for only one reason – he was the lead singer of the Boomtown Rats. The one single I remember from them was “I Don’t Like Mondays,” which Geldof wrote after Brenda Ann Spencer opened fire on an elementary school in San Diego in 1979. Geldof would later organize events that would make him well known around the world. In 1984, Geldof teamed up with Midge Ure of Ultravox to write the song “Do They Know It’s Christmas?” The song was written in reference to the people of Ethiopia who were … Continue reading

Money to Burn

Recession? What recession? Spend a day in the life of a super star celebrity and you might not believe that the country has hit upon hard economic times. Hollywood stars including “Mission Impossible II” actress Michelle … Continue reading

Celebs Saving Lives

Libby and I often write about Hollywood do-gooders who use their star status to raise money for poverty-stricken families that live in some of the most desolate parts of the world, but rarely do we get to share stories of celebrities who go beyond just appearing at fundraisers and actually physically reach out to those in need. Enter Rihanna. The Grammy-winning singer recently made headlines for coming to the aid of a leukemia-stricken New York City mom of two who desperately needs a bone marrow transplant. The singer told reporters that when she learned about Lisa Gershowitz Flynn’s predicament her … Continue reading

Bono and George Michael Break Records

The popular musicians are back in the headlines again, though not exactly for the same reasons. Per usual, Bono is garnering attention for his philanthropic deeds, which broke records last week. Thanks to his famous pals the U2 frontman was able to raise more than $42 million in an art auction to benefit the Global Fund of the United Nations Foundation, which works to fight AIDS in Africa. The event took place on Valentine’s Day (apropos considering the cash went to benefit Bono’s RED charity) at Sotheby’s on New York’s Upper East Side and brought out everyone from Martha Stewart … Continue reading
