Sean Penn and Jim Carrey the New Stooges and Bob Barker Returns to “Price is Right”

Sean Penn as Larry from “The Three Stooges?” I’d have to see it to believe it… and even then I might not accept it. Then again, Penn is a double Oscar winner, so perhaps it won’t be that much of a stretch. After all, Penn did get his start in Hollywood playing goofball Jeff Spicoli in “Fast Times at Ridgemont High.” Regardless, the news of Penn signing on to play Larry in the Farrelly brothers’ big-screen update of “The Three Stooges” still caught me off guard. Penn is teaming up with Jim Carrey (who is currently “in negotiations” for the … Continue reading

Appreciating Elephants

Happy Elephant Appreciation Day! This was perhaps the easiest of celebration days for me to find out about. History Mission Media, Inc. declared September 22nd Elephant Appreciation Day in 1996. The company is a digital and print publisher of graphics, but it’s owned by the Hepburn Family. (Maybe a relation of Katherine and Audrey Hepburn?) Wayne Hepburn, Mission Media’s publisher and president, started the day because the elephant: • is the largest living land mammal • has a unique nose –it’s trunk! • is noble • is an endangered species • has helped man in various ways throughout the ages … Continue reading

Barker’s Return?

Stop the presses! Could all the hoopla surrounding Bob Barker’s massively hyped exit from “The Price Is Right” been for naught? Perhaps. Seems that the silver-haired host who hung up his microphone (presumably) for good just a few days ago MAY be returning to the show after all. At least temporarily. Barker recently told news reporters that he would “happily return” to the show if a replacement host isn’t found by the time the new season starts in September. “They’re having trouble finding someone to do the show,” Barker said. “And I’ve told members of the staff here that … … Continue reading

Bye-Bye Bob!

My co-blogger Libby and I share many things in common—including having grown up watching Bob Barker on “The Price Is Right.” So it is with a touch of sadness that we collectively mourn his final days on the popular TV game show. Come June 15th Bob Barker will no longer be a part of daytime TV. It is a loss that millions of Barker fans have been preparing for since the Emmy Award-winning host announced his retirement plans last year. Today has been dubbed “Black Wednesday” on the series’ set—it is the day that Barker tapes his farewell show. And … Continue reading

The Elephant Sanctuary

My husband and I are members of a group called Team Green. They’re an adventure club sponsored by one of the local radio stations. Each month they organize a variety of activities for members, many of which are also open to the public. I was scanning the list of events for this month when one in particular really caught my eye: volunteer day at the Elephant Sanctuary on May 19th. An elephant sanctuary? In Tennessee? I never knew! Not too many months back I watched a piece on CBS’s 60 Minutes about a woman in Africa who runs a sanctuary … Continue reading

Bob Barker Pays To House Elephant

What’s that saying: “If you’ve got it–spend it.” While other celebrities are donating money to poor children in Africa, their alma maters, and victims of natural disasters one popular game show host is pledging hundreds of thousands of dollars to his pet cause—animals. “The Price Is Right” host Bob Barker says he will pledge $300,000 toward housing an elephant from the Los Angeles Zoo in an animal sanctuary. Barker’s publicist told news reporters the donation would match other monetary contributions made in support of sending Ruby, a 45-year-old African elephant, to a sanctuary in San Andreas in Northern California. Currently, … Continue reading

The Mahout

A mahout is the person who cares for and trains an elephant. The word comes from a Sanskrit word — mahamatra — meaning “one having great measure”. Elephant handlers are also called cornac or kornak, from the Singhalese word kurawanayaka — meaning “stable master”. The mahout is assisted in elephant care by a grass cutter and occasionally a waged assistant. The grass cutter is often responsible for feeding, bathing, and grooming the elephant — all of the care with none of the training. Often, working as a mahout is a family business. A child around the age of ten is … Continue reading

Celebrity Animal Attraction

It’s the awards show my 3-year-old dog-loving daughter would love front row tickets to–the Fido Awards. Britain’s first-ever awards to honor canine cinematic excellence were handed out Sunday and caused quite a scene at London’s South Bank arts center. The show, billed as the world’s first-ever international awards ceremony for canine screen stars, was packed with howling performances by four-legged stars. But, at the end of the night only a handful of pooches walked away with the award for “top dog.” And the winners were… Drum roll please… The tail-wagging stars from the Oscar-winning film “The Queen.” Poppy, Anna, Alice, … Continue reading

Celebrity Updates: Ian and Harry—REJECTS!

Frankly, I didn’t even know he was a serious contender. (Actually, I didn’t even know he was in the running at all.) But, according to former “Beverly Hills, 90210” star Ian Ziering, he was stunned to hear Drew Carey beat him out for “The Price Is Right” gig. “I guess I was a little disappointed,” Ziering, recently told reporters. “I was really kind of hoping that would happen. Sure, he did a fairly decent job recently lighting up the floor on last season’s “Dancing with the Stars,” but I’m not sure knowing how to shake your groove qualifies a person … Continue reading

Yours… IF The Price Is Right

If you missed Bob Barker’s last appearance (maybe) on “The Price is Right” this morning, don’t worry CBS plans to rebroadcast it tonight prior to the Daytime Emmy Awards. BUT (and this is a big BUT) if you want to bid on the legendary game show host’s microphone you only have to the end of Barker’s repeat broadcast to do so. For those of you non-die-hard Barker fans, the man who has been kissed on the cheek by excited contestants on more occasions than he cares to remember stands to make eBay history. The retiring game show host’s long, skinny, … Continue reading
