Soul Legend Isaac Hayes Dead at 65

I had a wonderful day of shopping in Wilmington only to come home to read the sad news that Isaac Hayes had died. I guess this hit home more than some deaths because Isaac was from my hometown of Memphis. The Grammy and Oscar winner was found unconscious in his home, next to his treadmill that was still running according to a spokeman for the Shelby County Sheriff’s Department. The paramedics called to the scene tried to revive him, but he pronounced dead at Baptist Memorial hospital a little after 2:00 p.m. Hayes started out his career as a session … Continue reading

Bernie Mac is Dead

He didn’t make it. Six days ago I blogged about actor Bernie Mac’s ill health. At the time, the Emmy and Golden Globe nominated TV star was said to be battling pneumonia in a Chicago hospital, but Mac’s rep told reporters that the comedian was on the road to recovery and was expected to be released in a few days. Sadly, it appears things didn’t turn out the way Mac and his loved ones had hoped. Less than an hour ago the actor’s publicist issued a statement saying that Mac passed away this morning from complications due to pneumonia. He … Continue reading

Bernie Mac: A Laugh Every Minute

Bernard Jeffrey McCullough was born on October 8, 1958, in Chicago, Illinois. His family was large and they all lived together under one roof in one of the rougher areas of the city. His youth and its hardships became endless fodder for his comedy, which is fresh and brash and unlike any other. As a youth, he worked in the Regal Theater and performed in the local parks. In 1977, at the age of 19, he became a professional comedian. He was so broke that for his first gig at the Cotton Club in Chicago he had to borrow a … Continue reading

Billy Bob Thornton – a Curse to Co-Stars?

I like Billy Bob Thornton. Oh, I know, he can be a bit freaky in real life with the vial of blood around his neck (when he and Angelina were still together) and the fear of antiques (what is that all about?). But, I think he is an excellent actor with a certain kind of quirky charm. However, could being in a film with him be harming his fellow co-stars? If you’ve read my blogs before, you know I enjoy the dark side of Hollywood, so how could I have missed the fact that some think there is a Billy … Continue reading

Parting is Such Sweet Sorrow

Of the 6,000 fans that gathered outside a Chicago church last week to bid farewell to actor Bernie Mac more than half wondered why his publicist continually fed false health updates to the media during his hospitalization. The comedian’s rep is remaining mum, but Mac’s widow recently went public with her reaction to her beloved husband’s death. Just a few days ago Mac’s wife of 30 years spoke to reporters and admitted that initially she didn’t think much of her late husband’s trip to the hospital. As she tells it, the comedian had a fever and trouble breathing, but didn’t … Continue reading
