Being Frugal Is A Way Of Life – New FL Blogger Intro

Finally, I’m writing my Frugal Living introduction post. Better late than never, I always say. I wanted to say hello to my fellow FL living blogger Mary Ann Romans, and all of Families.com new bloggers. Since starting with this website about a month ago I’ve been having a lot of fun writing in my various topics. Being able to share and learn is a wonderful thing. As the title of my blog today states, being frugal truly is a way of life, not just one area of it. Many times someone may start out counting pennies in the area of … Continue reading

Beautiful Big Girls

She’s throwing down the gauntlet; challenging Hollywood to redefine what makes a woman beautiful. You have to love Queen Latifah’s brazen style of bucking the traditional Tinsel town trend. The cover girl recently let loose during an interview that asked stars to reveal their meaning of true beauty. “Beauty is not just a white girl. It’s so many different flavors and shades,” the 37-year-old rapper-actress told reporters. According to Latifah, in Hollywood the meter for beauty “has been a slim white girl.” But, the actress says it appears the tide may be changing-—a little. “(In Hollywood) we’ve definitely gotten better … Continue reading

Examining Reality Romances: The Girls of MTV’s The Hills

When Wayne and I first moved to Nashville we got cable, something we hadn’t had in Florida. But Comcast had a deal that made it worth our while so that’s how we came to have MTV and get hooked on a show called Laguna Beach: The Real O.C. It followed a group of “wealthy, attractive teenagers” during their senior year of high school. One of the stars from that show, Lauren Conrad, ended up getting a spin-off deal to star in a new show, The Hills. It follows her and her friends –Heidi, Whitney, and Audrina— living in Los Angeles … Continue reading

Big Girls Unite

Years ago the rap artist Sir Mix-A-Lot had a hit with the song “I Like Big Butts.” It was an ode to females who had large behinds. The song’s lyrics included phrases that applauded women who didn’t feel the need to loose weight in their “trunks.” Looking back, I could definitely see why some in the music industry, particularly the ones associated with Sir Mix-A-Lot’s record label, said the song helped boost the self-esteem of women who would ordinarily be ostracized for carrying extra weight in their backsides. Fast forward to 2007 and another song is getting the same recognition … Continue reading

Kudos to Oprah for Dreaming Big in South Africa

Yesterday, January 1, 2007 will make for a significant date in the lives of 150 girls in South Africa. 150 very fortunate girls began school at the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, in Henley-on-Klip which is just south of Johannesburg. The academy is open to girls, ages 11 and 12, who show strong academic and leadership potential and whose families make no more than $787 dollars per month. It will eventually accommodate 450 girls. The $40 million dollar facility is lavish for sure, boasting an on site theatre, top notch study and science lab facilities, a library and a … Continue reading

Recent Celebrity Splits

I learned of two celebrity splits today – well, one celebrity split and one pseudo-celebrity split. The pseudo-celebrity split was a reality couple – “The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” couple Adrienne Maloof and Paul Nassif has called it quits. It was actually Nassif that filed for legal separation today. He told TMZ, “The welfare of our children is my primary focus as Adrienne and I work through this difficult time.” He added, “I want the best for her and our children and I hope that everyone can respect our privacy away from the cameras.” The couple has three sons … Continue reading

The Opposite of Hoarding

Last night I got together with a few friends, who are also single, and we started talking about what needs to be done around our homes. I need help finishing my bedroom, I’m tearing out the existing closets to build one big one. The girls agreed to help and then Nancy asked us to help her. She said she is a hoarder and needs us to help get rid of all the stuff she has accumulated. You cannot imagine how excited I am! I am the anti hoarder, my friends make fun of me for my frequent purges. It’s really … Continue reading

Body Image and Social Media

There is a disturbing trend lately in social media, or should I say there is a new disturbing trend, there are already a lot of disturbing things out there. It seems that young girls are making videos of themselves and asking the world if they are pretty or not. As one girl said, she got several sweet comments but then the nasty ones started. At a time when all young girls are struggling with body and self image this is one of the worst things I can imagine. I certainly don’t want my daughters image of herself shaped by random … Continue reading

Preparing for Homecoming Weekend

(My Daughter’s Homecoming Dress) This weekend is homecoming weekend. It’s an exciting time for many teens and the parents who get to partake in the excitement. In some ways I feel like I get to live out my high school years through my daughter. I wasn’t allowed to go to homecoming. When I think back to my high school years, I do wish that I had been allowed to go. But getting to share in my daughter’s experience is more than making up for it. There is a lot of thought and planning that goes into this weekend. The first … Continue reading

Popular Baby Names From A Century Ago

Today, parents often give their newborns a name that was inspired by popular culture. This is not a new phenomena. If you take a close look at the baby names that were popular about one hundred years ago, you will find that your ancestors were also inspired by popular culture when they named their babies. Perhaps one of your ancestors was named after someone who was famous in 1910. In many ways, day to day life is very different now, than it was around one hundred years ago. Your ancestors didn’t have cell phones, access to the internet, or big … Continue reading
