Super Crazy Super Bowl Stunt

Did you hear the news? The Super Bowl between the Indianapolis Colts and the Chicago Bears was seen by 93.2 million people, making it the third most-watched TV broadcast in history. Only the 1982 “M-A-S-H” finale and the 1996 Super Bowl between the Dallas Cowboys and Pittsburgh Steelers had more viewers. One of those viewers was a teenager living in Minnesota whose family has a tradition of running around their yard during the big game. Personally, I think it’s a wacky tradition, but not a completely crazy concept… unless of course it is –17 degrees below zero when you’re executing … Continue reading

Crazy (But True) Christmas Tales

Holiday stress can drive even the most grounded individual a bit batty. This is well documented in the following incidents, which illustrate what happens to those who get caught up in the craziness of the crowds and the tick, tick, tick of the countdown-to-Christmas clock. Santa’s got nothing on a bunch of shoppers from Ohio. An electrical fire that broke out on Wednesday didn’t stop holiday shoppers from continuing to fill their carts. According to news reports, thick smoke filled a Dillards department store, but it didn’t deter deal hunters who wanted to pay for their merchandise before evacuating. Firefighters … Continue reading

Barefoot and… Crazy?

When most people say: “I’m going to hike the Appalachian Trail,” they are likely setting out to conquer a few miles of the 2,175-mile long foot path, which runs from Maine to Georgia. However, there are those who mean what they say. More than 500 people hike the entire Appalachian Trail, each year. But not one of them has tried to accomplish the feat barefoot—until now. Ron Zaleski says he would like to be the first, but he’s not doing it to get his name inscribed in history books. His goal is to bring attention to the need for combat … Continue reading

Unexpected Difficulties with Wedding Invitations

I had a hard time choosing my wedding invitations. I suppose you could say I was a stereotypical picky bride about them, though I never got angry or chewed anyone out. I just wanted something simple, and I couldn’t find anything on the market that fit. I did have an ideal wedding invitation, and it was totally possible to make. The idea came from a close friend of mine. He said it should just be a blank white card, with the words “We’re Getting Married” alone on the front. Opening the card would reveal the simple words “You Should Come.” … Continue reading

Travel Tidbits For Special Needs Travelers

There’s nothing more relaxing than retreating to the woods for some R&R. Especially when a cool breeze sweeps over you as you gaze at a colorful vista of wildflowers bordered by deep green vegetation. Our country’s park system gives us the opportunity to soak in all that nature has to offer, but what if you are wheelchair bound? How do you navigate the windy trails that lace up and down areas such as Vermont’s picturesque Green Mountains? These days it is much easier. A specialized trail there makes the park’s picture-perfect settings much easier to access for visitors with physical … Continue reading

Book Review: Motherbridge of Love

Motherbridge of Love has definitely earned a place in my Adoption Books with Great Art series. (Anyone would enjoy the gorgeous artwork—in fact, this book was number 3 on Time Magazine’s “10 Best Children’s Books of 2007” list.) This book is based on an anonymous poem familiar to many people connected with adoption, usually called “Legacy of an Adopted Child”. There are several versions which change the wording only slightly. Personally, I hadn’t found this particular poem especially moving until I saw this version. (Maybe because the version I saw had the line “heredity or environment—which are you a product … Continue reading

Weird Beauty Tips

A friend sent me a link to a list of weird beauty tips from Cosmopolitan magazine. Some of these I’ve heard before, some of them I haven’t. Here are a few of my favorites! A dab of toothpaste can cure a zit. This one I’ve heard before (but never tried). The beauty experts at Cosmo suggest leaving the toothpaste on for just 15 minutes, then washing it off. The person who told me about it said to leave the toothpaste on overnight, but I can see how that’d either smear off in your sleep or possibly clog more pores and … Continue reading

Old Navy Flip-Flops $2 Shipped

When I was in high school, I almost never wore shoes. It was southern California, and most days we were in shorts and flip-flops. My favorites were flo-jos (no, nothing to do with Florence Joyner), but any pair that left my feet free to breathe were welcomed. These days, they’re not so practical here in the Northwest except from Memorial Day to Labor Day, but I relish the summer days when rain boots are not necessary. There’s something just so freeing about having your feet bare, or almost bare, anyway. Old Navy is helping me to relive my past, but … Continue reading

“Take A Hike”—On The Appalachian Trail

Have you ever heard the expression: “Take a hike?” Growing up, it was considered my dad’s catchphrase. Whenever my brothers or I wanted to use the car for some Friday night fun we’d nervously approach my father and sheepishly ask if we could PLEASE borrow the keys. His response: “Take a hike.” (He, of course, was kidding—well, at least most of the time.) Years (make that decades) have passed since I was told to “take a hike,” but the phrase stuck and I think about it (flashback, flashback) whenever I hear about nature trails. Such is the case in writing … Continue reading
