B.B. King Gains a Museum while Elvis Loses One

Legendary bluesman B.B. King has gotten his own museum in Indianola, Mississippi, his home town. You may not have heard of Indianola, it is a tiny town of just over 12,000. But they rolled out the carpet for their favorite son with a $15 million dollar B.B. King and Delta Interpretative Center. B.B. said that he hopes the museum will be used to education the young and old about the origins of the blues. The 20,000 square foot museum is a mixture of the new (with touch screen interactivity) and the old (vinyl records and yellowed, faded recording contracts from … Continue reading

New Duets from Elvis and Country Stars

Isn’t technology amazing? Elvis Presley, the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll, has been dead for almost 31 years, yet we will be able to enjoy a “new” Elvis album soon. Just as we saw Celine Dion “sing” with Elvis a couple of years ago on “American Idol,” we will now be able to purchase a Christmas duets album featuring Elvis and some country music stars, including a few who weren’t even born before he died. The album, titled “Elvis Presley Christmas Duets,” will be released on October 14th. In his career, Elvis only recorded 20 different Christmas songs, yet he … Continue reading

Another Elvis Heir on the Way

While her mom is dropping dress sizes preparing for her “Dancing with the Stars” debut, Lisa Marie Presley is happily packing on the pounds as she awaits the birth of her third child. Yes, it’s true Elvis Presley’s only child is due to give birth this fall. Lisa Marie is reportedly three months along and is “incredibly overjoyed” to be pregnant again. The new baby will be the first for the 40-year-old singer and her husband, guitarist and music producer Michael Lockwood who were married in Japan in January 2006. Presley has two children, daughter Riley, 18, and son Benjamin, … Continue reading

Do You Shield Your Child?

Today is Pearl Harbor Day, the 70th anniversary of a sneak attack that devastated a nation. I’ve studied this event a bit in the past, and it’s pretty gruesome. I want my children to understand facets of history, and yet I worry about giving them too much information before they’re ready for it. This is one of the ways in which parents are uniquely qualified to teach their children—they understand their child’s maturity level and they know what that child can and cannot handle. I have a daughter who can’t hear any bad news on the radio or it distresses … Continue reading

Conjoined Craniopagus Twins Successfully Seperated

Another set of conjoined twins is in the news. This time, the twins are girls who were connected to each other by their heads. The girls have undergone a surgical separation, and appear to be doing quite well. This means that two of the three sets of conjoined twins that have been in the news lately have been separated, and can go on to live a normal life. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the overall survival rate for conjoined twins (of any type) is around 25%. Only around one out of every 50,000 pregnancies result in conjoined twins. … Continue reading

Two Sets of Conjoined Twins in the News

Conjoined twins is the term used to describe babies who are born with some portion of their body physically attached to the body of their sibling. This is a rare occurrence. Recently, in the news, there have been stories about two sets of conjoined twins, from two different families. Only around 1 out of every 50,000 pregnancies result in conjoined twins. Even fewer, around 1 in every 250,000 sets of conjoined twins make it to a live birth. Many die before that can occur. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, the overall survival rate for conjoined twins is around … Continue reading

West Memphis Three Freed – Part 1

Sometimes I think of a blog to write, but the category it belongs in may be a bit blurry. Many blogs I write could fall both within the Pop Culture and Green Living blog. Such is this blog about the West Memphis Three. In 1993, three teenagers – Damien Echols, Jessie Misskelley, and Jason Baldwin – were accused of committing a horrible crime just across the river from my hometown of Memphis, Tennessee. Three eight-year-old boys – Stevie Branch, Michael Moore, and Christopher Byers – were found murdered. The three teenagers were convicted in what many later called a “witch … Continue reading

Did You Ever Have One of Those Days?

Sometimes you know it’s just going to be like in the Elvis song Did you ever have one of those days – days where every thing goes wrong. The day started with my breakfast of banana, boysenberries and blueberries Mick and I had picked the day before at the berry farm and muesli all over the floor. What happened? I was working and wasn’t quite watching what I was doing, missed the desk and hey presto, breakfast was on the floor. Get another bowl and start again. Take two. Our little dog discovered she likes muesli and berries. She always … Continue reading

No Teen Idols Allowed

There seems to be an uproar over Miley Cyrus’s pole dance performance at the 2009 Teen Choice Award show. People are appalled. People are astonished. People are surprised. I’m not. I appears that parents want teen idols to be pure and chaste and have squeaky clean images so that our kids might follow in their footsteps. Since our teens do imitate and emulate those they idolize, everyone wants to control the private lives and performances of teen stars in an effort to control their own kids. This is laughable. Historically, (for the last 50 years anyway) teen idols have always … Continue reading

Drop That Baby!

There are many signs to look out for when you are waiting for labor to begin. You may lose your mucus plug, your water may break, you may notice an increase of vaginal discharge or spot the bloody show. If you are a first time mom, you may also experience something known as lightening up to four weeks before delivery. Second time moms typically see their babies “drop” much later, sometimes after labor has already gotten started. Dropping is a really good sign: it means the baby has engaged the presenting part (head) into the pelvis. When this happens, the … Continue reading
