Protecting Your Eyes

One of my favorite journalists – heck, who am I kidding? – my favorite journalist, Anderson Cooper, suffered temporary blindness this past week. Did he have some genetic condition that caused this blindness?  Did he splash something in his eye?  No, Cooper sunburned his eyes while in Portugal. Sunburned his eyes?  Just the mere thought of that makes my eyes squint in horror! Awakened by pain, Cooper originally dismissed it as sand in his eyes.  But, he realized when he was blind that it was something more serious.  Cooper lost his eyesight for 36 hours. That must have been pretty … Continue reading

Crisis in Somalia

Last Wednesday, the United Nations (U.N.) officially declared a famine in two regions of southern Somalia. But, Somalia isn’t the only African country in danger. Ethiopia, Kenya, and Djibouti – all Horn of Africa countries – are undergoing the worst drought in over 60 years. Crops have failed and livestock have died. What this means is that those who aren’t dying are trying to escape the worst drought Somalia has seen in 20 years. Thin, emaciated people are showing up in surrounding areas, clutching whatever few possessions they can manage to carry with them. Some have walked over a hundred … Continue reading

Star-Studded Celebrity Benefits for Haiti

If there is one thing celebrities love to turn out for it is benefit events. Last Monday on his nightly show, Larry King hosted a two-hour special that raised almost $9 million for Haiti relief. On the show helping man the phones were such celebs as Paula Abdul, Jennifer Lopez, Mick Jagger, Ringo Starr, Ben Stiller, Will.I.Am, P. Diddy, Ashley Judd, Snoop Dog, Ryan Seacrest, Scarlette Johansson, John Mayer, Nicole Richie, and Joel Madden. There was also an auction of celebrity items. Believe it or not, Jared Leto paid $1,000 for a pair of Larry King’s famous suspenders. If that … Continue reading

Ben Affleck Calls for Hope in the Congo

Ben Affleck is a celebrity with a cause – the eastern Congo. Ben has been traveling to the Congo since 2007 to see the devastating effects on the war-torn country. He also filmed a documentary of his time in the country. It is believed that about three million civilians have been displaced since the fighting between the government and rebel troops started. (This image is a work of a sailor or employee of the U.S. Navy, taken or made during the course of the person’s official duties. Katie Wars

When I last posted about the Katie Couric drama brewing at CBS News things weren’t looking too good for the perky anchor. Ratings for the former “Today” star have been the worst in CBS News history and practically every newspaper and news website around has Couric bolting from the eye network to CNN where she will reportedly take over for the retiring Larry King. Well, now the tide might be changing at CBS (though, I highly doubt it since new reports indicate that CBS wants CNN’s hunky anchor Anderson Cooper to replace Couric) given a recent surprise visit to the … Continue reading

Tucker Carlson Leaves MSNBC

I really only know of Tucker and his infamous bow tie from his stint on “Dancing with the Stars” (short though it was), but now you will not even be able to turn on MSNBC to see Tucker Carlson’s show “Tucker.” The show began in June 2003, but MSNBC just announced its cancellation today. Tucker will remain at MSNBC as a campaign reporter. Tucker is the son of Richard Warner Carlson, himself local news anchor in Los Angeles. He was also the director of the U.S. Information Agency and an ambassador to Seychelles, so maybe that is how Tucker got … Continue reading

Married with (In the Near Future) Children and a Split

Nancy Grace: A Newly Wed and a Soon-to-be-Mother This morning on CNN Headline News, anchor Nancy Grace announced that she not only secretly got married, she is also expecting twins! At the age of 47, this puts her in the Marcia Cross Club of older moms expecting twins. She married Atlanta investment banker David Lynch in April. The two originally met at Mercer College in the late 70s. Grace said that she never expected to get married, and that this was a “spur of the moment” thing. She only notified family members two days before the wedding. She is set … Continue reading

More Divorces, a Baby, and a Threat

It seems that every week in Hollywood, we get a couple of announcements of couple separations and at least one announcement of a couple expecting a little bundle of joy. Here is the latest from Hollywood: Divorces: Actress Anna Faris has filed for divorce from her husband of three years, actor Benjamin Indra. You may remember Faris from her roles in the Scary Movie series, Brokeback Mountain, and My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Indra has been in a few low budget horror flicks such as Lover’s Lane and Voodoo Academy. The couple married in 2004 and reportedly separated last month. CNN Newswoman … Continue reading

CNN-Free Hotel Rooms

If you are a news junkie who’s used to flipping back and forth between all of the all-news television networks then you may want to be careful where you make your next hotel reservation. A Midwest hotel chain has pulled CNN from the TV channel lineup in its guest rooms, saying the cable network was aiding terrorism with the broadcast of a video showing Iraqi snipers shooting at U.S. troops. The broadcast, which aired last month on both CNN and CNN Headline News, featured edited portions of a tape the network said it obtained from a rebel group called Islamic … Continue reading
