Celebrity Splits: The Curse of the Other Woman

It’s no secret that Shania Twain and her husband, music producer Robert “Mutt” Lange are headed for divorce court, but since the shocking news broke last week enquiring minds have wondered what drove the two apart. Now it appears the truth is slowly coming out and it can be summed up in two words: Another Woman. According to several publications, Lange’s comment about the demise of his 14-year relationship with Twain being “a growing apart, that’s all” might only be a half-truth. Sources close to the couple say the real truth is that Lange was having an affair with Marie-Anne … Continue reading

An Unexpected Split—NOT!

I would have been more surprised if they had stayed together… News flash for all you celebrity couple watchers: Denise Richards and Richie Sambora have called it quits. According to TV’s “Entertainment Tonight,” the couple’s reps confirmed that the pair broke up about two months ago. It may seem strange that it took most media outlets eight weeks to report the the news that two are no longer together, but if you consider that Richards and Sambora were still appearing at personal and public functions on each other’s arms I could see why some were thrown for a loop. Personally, … Continue reading

Celebrities’ Unexpected Callings

When we watched her cuddling an emaciated extraterrestrial on the big screen as a little girl I’m sure not very many of us would have imagined Drew Barrymore would grow up to be an advocate for the world’s hungry. But, alas, life is unpredictable. Yes, it is true. Actress Drew Barrymore has been named an ambassador against hunger for the World Food Program. The global humanitarian program provides food aid to more than 90 million poor people, including 58 million hungry children who live in 80 of the world’s poorest countries. Members of the media have been following the 32-year-old … Continue reading

What’s the Best Value: Buying Big vs Buying Small?

Sometimes you have to buy big and sometimes you have to buy small if you want to get the best value for your money. It all depends on the circumstance. At the grocery store, you want to buy big when buying in bulk will save you the most money. Of course, it doesn’t always work that way. Always check unit price and do a comparison of your various options. Usually this works well on items that aren’t otherwise on sale, don’t have coupons, can be used up before they expire or are purchased at a bulk warehouse store where normal … Continue reading

End of Month Spending Check

Tomorrow is the last day of the month, and it is time to do an end-of-month spending check. In January, I have been focusing on groceries and food, keeping track of our spending in those areas and saving as much as I can. Writing down what I spend on each trip to the grocery store has helped. While I still don’t have a lot of coupon use, I’m paying more attention to the sales and not buying things that we don’t need, purchasing more fruit and less snacks for example. This has made a difference. I’ve also been more conscious … Continue reading

Did Your Ancestors Work for the Royal Family?

It has been said that many genealogists decide to work on their family trees because they want to find out if they are related to someone from a royal family. The UK version of the FindMyPast website now has records of the people who were employed by the British royal family. It isn’t the same as discovering that you are related to a King or Queen, but could still provide you with some interesting stories from your family history. There are a lot of fascinating things that can be found if you take the time to look closely at the … Continue reading

Great Breakups of 2011

Another year is almost finished and with it, several celebrity marriages. Some were predicted (Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries), some were unexpected (Maria Shriver and Arnold Schwarzenegger), and others were just anticipated from the start (Demi Moore and Ashton Kutcher). With Kim and Kris, I think many people predicted their marriage would end so we just simply wouldn’t have to see them on television or the cover of magazines anymore. No such luck. I was pretty surprised by the Maria and Arnold breakup. Yes, there had been rumors of him cheating, but the two had been together since 1977 (married … Continue reading

Twin Sisters Give Birth on the Same Day

Two twin sisters in Indiana ended up giving birth on the same day. This was unexpected, because one of the twins was supposed to give birth a bit later than the other. Instead, their babies ended up sharing the same birthday. Are their twins in your family tree? The discovery of ancestors who were twins are one of the things that can make genealogy research interesting. It could make you want to search through old family photos, to see how closely the twins resembled each other. Or, you might want to do some additional research, to see if there was … Continue reading

The $800 Car Repair Bill

Give me one good reason why we should keep this car. Actually, give me at least three. I’m ready to call it done. On Monday, my husband called from work to tell me that the brakes on one of our cars went out. Fortunately, this occurred when he was pulling into the parking lot, so the problem didn’t cause an accident. It is a scary thing of course, and I wonder why our regular maintenance checks didn’t catch a potential problem. We expected the repair bill to be reasonable, about $100 or so. So, we were floored when the shop … Continue reading
