Celebrity Vegans – Part 1

I have a confession to make – I am a meat lover. I know I need to eat more veggies and fruits, but I honestly don’t ever think I could go totally vegetarian. I love a good steak and burger every once in a while. I am curious about the vegan diet. Obviously if I couldn’t go straight vegetarian, I really couldn’t go straight vegan (give up cheese – gasp!). But, I eat at a local restaurant that serves vegan items and one day, I promise myself I am going to try it. However, there are many celebs who are … Continue reading

Catching Up with Reality Stars

There were two reality star weddings recently. The Velvet Teddy Bear, Ruben Studdard, married his girlfriend Surata Zuri McCants last Saturday at the Canterbury United Methodist Church in Birmingham, AL. More than 300 guests attended the wedding, all dressed in black and white. Ruben and his 20 groomsmen wore black tuxes while the bride wore a white and ivory Casablanca wedding gown. After the 30-minute ceremony, the newlyweds left for the reception at the Rosewood Hall at SoHo Square in Homewood. McCants and Studdard married when McCants showed up at an Atlanta Wal-Mart CD signing in 2006. McCant volunteered to … Continue reading

Did Biggest Loser Go Too Far?

If you watched Biggest Loser this past season, it was a special series – couples! There was a mother/daughter couple, a father/daughter couple, best friends, married couples, and even divorced couple. The divorced couple – Kelly Fields and Paul Marks – came in weighing quite a bit. Kelly weighed in at 271 – the heaviest female on this season. Paul wasn’t the heaviest male, but at 310 and only 5’ 4”, he was certainly at risk. His father and grandfather, both overweight, died before the age of 50. Already 43, Paul was looking to break that cycle. Although he and … Continue reading

New Miss America Speaks Out About Eating Disorder

What a difference a few years can make… It was just three years ago that newly crowned Miss America Kirsten Haglund was so painfully thin her parents “dragged” her to a doctor who diagnosed the teen with anorexia. This weekend the “recovered” Miss Michigan looked healthy and toned as she strutted her stuff in front of millions. The 19-year-old’s past battle with weight issues hardly seemed to hold her back as she advanced through pageant rounds and eventually walked away with the Miss America crown. It was only after the pageant that the Broadway hopeful, who belted out “Somewhere Over … Continue reading

Singing Away The (Labor) Pain

When I was in labor with my daughter (18 hours worth) I could barely see straight, never mind trying to belt out a song in front of a panel of judges. But that’s exactly what Antoria Gillon did Monday while auditioning for TV’s “American Idol.” No joke. The Dallas contestant performed her audition while in labor. And not only did she manage to endure contractions while she was on stage, the “Idol” hopeful also spent hours standing in line at Texas Stadium with 13,500 other contestants prior to getting her shot in front of the judges. Gillon told news reporters … Continue reading

Shaq Takes A Shot At Helping Overweight Kids

Perhaps, Ruben Studdard was too busy… ABC is hoping for a slam-dunk when it airs a new reality TV series starring NBA All-Star Shaquille O’Neal aiding overweight children. According to network execs, the show will focus on childhood obesity and health. The series, which will run during the summer months, will feature the Miami Heat star and his effort to help Florida schoolchildren lose weight. Show producers say the series is currently being filmed in Broward County, Florida and tracks the lives of the children involved. O’Neal will reportedly be on hand to support the children and (in episodes yet … Continue reading

Tyra’s New Body Image Campaign

In a previous blog I addressed former supermodel Tyra Banks’ recent weight gain. In a follow up blog I wrote about how the current talk-show host used her show as a platform to lash out at tabloid editors who dubbed her “Tyra Porkchop” and “America’s Next Top Waddle.” Did you see the show? I watched her rip into her critics and couldn’t help but cheer her on, though I did so in the confines of my own living room. Apparently, there were others out there that took their support for Tyra’s message a bit further. Producers of “The Tyra Banks … Continue reading

“American Idol” Winner Turns Into Big Loser

“American Idol” winner Ruben Studdard may be Alabama’s biggest loser… when it comes to pounds. Studdard’s recent weight loss of more than 100 pounds is serving as inspiration for a new weight loss program targeted at residents of his home state. The 28-year-old singer just unveiled his new plan to help overweight Alabama residents, telling them that he wants them to follow in his footsteps. According to local newspapers, the “Velvet Teddy Bear” – whose third album, “The Return,” was released in October – is asking the 25% of Alabama’s overweight residents to shed 10 pounds in eight weeks. The … Continue reading
