Celebrity Do-Gooders: Pizza and Progress

Okay, he’s not exactly saving the world, or feeding starving children, but Drew Carey is still using his millions (okay, it only cost him a few hundred dollars) to make people happy. The actor turned game show host is celebrating Saturday’s season finale of “The Price as Right” by having his favorite pizzas shipped to Los Angeles from his hometown pizzeria in Ohio. Carey, who claims the best pizza in the world is made at Antonio’s restaurant near his boyhood home in Cleveland, wanted to do something special for the cast and crew of the popular game show he hosts … Continue reading

Bad News for Hot Hollywood Celebrities

After 34 years of marriage Carlos Santana and his wife have decided to part ways. If you read Deborah Santana’s 2005 memoir “Space Between the Stars” you might have seen this coming. In fact, you might have wondered how the marriage survived as long as it did. In her book, Deborah described her award-winning guitarist husband as being “repeatedly unfaithful.” Apparently, she had enough because according to court documents filed last week, Deborah is asking a judge to dissolve the couple’s marriage, citing irreconcilable differences. For his part, Carlos Santana, admitted to making mistakes in his marriage. “I sincerely apologized … Continue reading

Hollywood Do-Gooders Making Headlines

Actor Will Ferrell claims he has a surefire way for you to win the parent of the year award. The bad news: It doesn’t come cheap. (Surprise, surprise.) But, the good news is that every penny goes to a great cause. The movie star is auctioning a cameo spot in his new film to raise money for a fraternity brother’s cancer foundation. The opening bid for the movie appearance is $5,000. Ferrell calls the auction the best place in the world for you to purchase the perfect Christmas present for your son or daughter—-the chance to work with him. You … Continue reading

Hollywood Celebrity Gives Early Christmas Present to Alma Mater

Oh, to be a millionaire! Oh, to be the friend of a millionaire… or at least the recipient of a generous gift from a millionaire. The millionaire I am referring to is actress Jada Pinkett Smith and the recipient of her generosity is her high school alma mater, the Baltimore School for the Arts. Smith recently donated $1 million to the school and asked that administrators use the money to build a new theater and dedicate it to classmate Tupac Shakur, who was shot and killed in 1996. “It means a lot when you’re a teacher and your most famous … Continue reading

A Growing Group of Hollywood Do-Gooders

I remember when a celebrity would make headlines for doing some type of charitable work. Nowadays it seems aiding the less fortunate is the “in” thing to do. Everyone from Eminem and Hootie and Blowfish to megawatt couple Brangelina and “Desperate Housewives’” Eva Longoria are lending their names (and Brangelina’s case, their own money) to charitable foundations. It’s gotten to the point where organizations are looking for creative ways to merge the celebrity and the cause. Such is the case with the Relix Bands. Relix Bands are crafted by Azu Studios from the used guitar strings of more than 50 … Continue reading

Stephen Colbert–Public School Teachers’ Hero

Don’t underestimate the power of Stephen Colbert. The Comedy Central star may have lost out on his chance to run for the president of the United States, but his words are still powerful enough to rally the troops. During the hoopla surrounding Colbert’s mock presidential bid the host of Comedy Central’s “The Colbert Report” also asked viewers to give to DonorsChoose.org, which helps fulfill teacher wish lists for books, globes and other classroom materials in schools throughout the country. A South Carolina native, Colbert took time to promote the organization in an effort to help public school teachers and students … Continue reading

Celebrities Lending a Hand

Madonna is putting her money where her mouth is. The adoption advocate is teaming up with Gucci to raise money for orphans in Malawai. The impoverished southern African nation is where the Material Girl and her husband Guy Ritchie met their 2-year-old son David Banda. (The couple has not officially been named the boy’s parents, but he has been living with them since last year.) According to the 49-year-old singer, she will host a star-studded fundraiser – including a dinner, musical performance and party – on February 6, 2008 to open Gucci’s new store on New York’s Fifth Avenue. “I … Continue reading

Charitable Celebrities Bring Hope To Sick Children and Sick Celebrity Works On Getting Well

CHARTIABLE CELEBRITIES Who knew a love story about an accident-prone penguin keeper and an “everyman” could serve as the catalyst to aid sick children? Hard to believe, but it happened this week at a Knoxville, Tennessee movie theater. That’s where hundreds of fans gathered to greet Jessica Alba and Dane Cook during a screening of their new movie “Good Luck Chuck.” Local residents paid $75 a piece to see the actors and attend the screening of the new comedy, which opens to the general public today. The fundraiser raised $260,000 for Variety of Eastern Tennessee, a charity benefiting children with … Continue reading

Celebrities, The Environment, and Human Rights

Celebrities and their pet charities are a popular topic in this blog. Libby and I have written about stars lending a hand to the homeless, the innocent, and the sick. But, this week the spotlight focused on a growing concern among politicians, actors, and musicians—the environment. Actress Cameron Diaz, hip-hop producer Pharrell, and former vice president Al Gore joined forces to announce an international campaign to promote global warming awareness. The monster event to be held this summer is called Save Our Selves – The Campaign for a Climate in Crisis. It features a 24-hour “Live Earth” concert, which will … Continue reading

Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon

I sat through the movie “Six Degrees of Separation” twice and I still couldn’t follow what was going on (my boyfriend at the time finally gave up trying to get me up to speed). Apparently, I am in the minority when it comes to understanding the movie’s nuances because not long after the film debuted a parlor game called the “Six Degrees of Kevin Bacon” debuted and has become as popular as the movie, which inspired it. Ironically, Bacon admits that he is mystified by the game’s popularity, but he’s decided to put it to good use anyway. According to … Continue reading
